Richard (Dick) L. Cunningham87, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on December 16th, 2016. He was born on January 9th, 1929 in Indianapolis to parents Arthur and Rowena (Shroyer) Cunningham. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 63 years Jean (Roettger) Cunningham and daughter Barbra J. Cunningham. He is survived by his daughter Debra A. Pisciotta, his son Ronald L. (Cathy) Cunningham, his son Steven P. (Cynthia) Cunningham and grandchildren Michael, Matthew, Elizabeth and Patrick as well as great grandchildren Eli, Christopher and Roman. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and his cat L.C.Dick graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis, and
Purdue University where he was a member of the ROTC and Alpha Xi Rho fraternity. He was a member of Roberts Park United Methodist Church for over 70 years. He served on numerous committees, as a member of the Men's Group and helping Jean cook and serve many special dinners. He was also a member of the Brookside Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and was a 33rd Degree Mason.Dick was a Lieutenant in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. Dick loved airplanes and flying. He served as Director of the Indiana Aeronautics Commission, was chief pilot for the State of Indiana, worked for several airlines and the Indianapolis Airport Authority and served on the Indianapolis Airport Authority Board.He was the Personnel Director for the City of Indianapolis under Mayor Richard Lugar and was elected to serve as the Washington Township Assessor for six terms, retiring in 1999. He was active in local and state politics serving in numerous positions and was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by four different governors for his service to the people of Indiana.When not filling his time working or volunteering, Dick found great joy in reading, annual family trips to fish in northern Wisconsin and his cat L.C.The family is very appreciative of the wonderful care and compassion provided to Dick by the doctors, nurses and staff of Marquette Manor in Indianapolis.Services for Dick will be at Roberts Park United Methodist Church, 401 N. Delaware, at 12:30 p.m., Thursday December 22nd, with visitation from 10:30 a.m. until services. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Roberts Park United Methodist Church Endowment Fund or to Outreach, Inc., 2822 E. New York St. Indianapolis, IN 46201 would be appreciated.
