Raymond "Sarge" Hill, 86, passed peacefully at the Missouri Veteran's Home in Cameron, MO on December 4, 2016. Ray was born on December 30, 1929 at home in Beverly, MO to Russell Hill, Sr. and Minnie (Searcy) Hill. He graduated from West Platte High School in 1948. He married Wilma Pauline Artrup on November 2, 1952 in Fairfield, NE. Ray and Wilma recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. Ray is survived by Wilma and his daughter Christine (Scott) Hill Corbett both of Weston, MO and son Randy (Danielle) of La Luz, NM. Ray leaves behind 5 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 2 great granddaughters and 1 great grandson. Ray is also survived by sisters Nida Campbell and Della (Donald) Porter of Farley, MO and brother Clyde Hill of Beverly, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Mona, sister Dorothy Louise Thomas, brother Russell Hill, Jr., brother Robert "Bob" Hill, half-brother Elwood "Woody" Reynolds, and half-sister Mary Jesse Cloud.Ray had 26 years of distinguished service in the United States Army, Air Defense Artillery, retiring September 30, 1980 as a First Sergeant. He participated in the Korean conflict and was stationed at Ft. Bliss, TX for 4 tours, in addition to tours in Baumholder, Germany; Spangdahlem, Germany; Ft. Richardson, AK; and Ft. Lewis, WA. During his early years in the Army, he was attached to a Nike Hercules missile air defense unit. During the late 1960's, he volunteered to work with the then new Vulcan/Chaparral air defense system as it was introduced to the Army. His expertise and understanding of the system led to his assignment as an inspector and trouble shooter at Ft. Bliss, TX for the units that were receiving training there on the new system. After his promotion to First Sergeant, he was assigned to commands in Ft. Bliss, TX, Anchorage, Alaska, and Ft. Lewis, Washington. He retired from the Army while stationed at Ft. Lewis. In 1981, Ray and Wilma returned to Weston with daughter Christine, residing in Countryside Estates for 12 years. While at Weston, he worked as a civil service plumber for Ft. Leavenworth. In 1993, Ray retired from civil service and they returned to the Southwest to reside in Alamogordo, New Mexico. While in New Mexico, he re-discovered his love of the great outdoors, so he and Wilma purchased an RV and spent much of their time camping, fishing and touring the country. Ray and Wilma returned to Weston in July, 2014 to be near family and friends. Ray was an avid fisherman, hunter, and model train enthusiast as well as a devoted father and husband. He will be missed!Visitation will be held December 9 at 9:30am, service to follow at 10:30am, at the Weston Christian Church, 540 Washington St., Weston, MO. Full military honor service at Ft. Leavenworth National Cemetery to follow.
