GRIFTON | Phyllis A. Davenport, 75, of Grifton, passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2014, at Vidant Medical Center. She was born on February 3, 1939, in Lenoir County to Woodrow and Mable Stroud Alford. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of Grifton United Methodist Church where she was the Historian, Chairperson of Trustee's, Chairperson of Hospitality and past President of the United Methodist Women. Phyllis was awarded the recognition pin of outstanding service to her Lord, her church and her community. She was employed by the Pitt County School System where she worked as a Teacher's Assistant and Substitute Teacher in the Grifton School. Phyllis is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, William Roger Davenport, of the home; one son, Vern Davenport and wife Julie, of Wake Forest; and one daughter, Deidre Fowler and husband Jeff, of Charlotte. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, Jordan Drumheller and husband Tyler, Devin, Madison, Maggie, Sarah and Riley Davenport, Austin, Eli, M.E., and Jeffrey Fowler; two aunts, Mary Stroud and Flora Mae Chandler; and special first cousins, Sandra and Donald Huber, Brenda and Lewis Barrow and Donna and Keith Mercer. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Grifton United Methodist Church, with a visitation following the service. Inurnment will be private for the family.
