Memorial services for Phillip "Phil" Dale Tozier are planned for 10 a.m. on Friday, February 17, 2017, at First United Methodist Church, with Preacher Dave Rogers of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ officiating. Cremation has taken place under the direction of West Funeral Home. Condolences may be expressed at westfuneralhomellc.com Poet, actor, philosopher and friend, Phil Tozier, 55, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, February 5, 2017, at Carlsbad Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Phil was known by many as the voice of KCCC Radio's "Let's Trade Even" program in Carlsbad, and he served as the station engineer. He was very active with Carlsbad Community Theater, where he directed, acted or provided crew work with 60 different plays. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the theater. He was also a Chautauqua performer, and he participated in a wide variety of historic, artistic and philanthropic activities around Carlsbad. cPhil strove to make a difference in his community, but he also greatly valued his many close friendships. He was the past president of the Democratic Party of Eddy County. Phil was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. He was also active with the Desert Springs Unitarian community. Finally, he was also one of Carlsbad's most prolific dog and cat sitters and was perhaps one of the best customers of Carlsbad's "Cat's Meow" thrift store. Phillip Dale Tozier was born on January 2, 1962, in Albuquerque. His parents were Lloyd Lewis Tozier and Nina Mae (Summers) Tozier. He graduated from Alamogordo High School. He held a Bachelor of Science in Philosophy with a minor in German and a Master of the Arts in Public Administration, all from New Mexico State University. He moved to Carlsbad in 1989. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by a sister, Mary Ellen Estrada of Albuquerque; two children, Lloyd Tozier and wife Sheena Foster of Silverdale, Wash., and Edrice Tozier of Roswell; two grandchildren, Ada Tozier and Emilie Tozier; five nieces and nephews; and many, many close friends around Carlsbad. Phil was an incredibly intelligent person, who quested throughout his life to expand on his vast trove of knowledge and wisdom. He will be dearly missed.
