Philippa Mary Hudon Follert, beloved mother, grandmother and community member of Montrose, died on May 12, 2016 in Denver, Colo. due to complications following a stroke. Philippa Follert was born on October 20, 1938 in Waterbury, Conn., to her parents, Viola and Albert Hudon and raised in Collinsville, Conn. She was the oldest of four. Philippa graduated from Potsdam University in NY in 1960 with a degree in Music Education.. She completed graduate coursework in music education at Skidmore College. She married Richard Follert, also of Collinsville, in 1961. The Follerts started out in North Caldwell, NJ, and then moved to Montrose, in 1964 when Dick began a job at Singer-Link in Binghamton, and Philippa taught instrumental and choral music in the Montrose Area Public Schools, beginning part-time in 1967 and going full-time in 1972. She retired in 2006 having taught music to generations of Montrose area children. After retirement, she was instrumental in establishing the Montrose Adult School, educating and caring for her grandchildren, and participating in many community causes. She was a quilt-maker and pie-maker extraordinaire, often making both for good causes near and far. She was a member of the Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church.Philippa was a passionate teacher dedicated to helping children to discover their gifts. Many went on to study music thanks to her encouragement. Others gained self confidence and valuable life experience as she challenged them to demonstrate their abilities and match her high standards. Although she played clarinet and could bang out a tune on the piano, her greatest musical gifts were as a music teacher, choral conductor and musical director. She is remembered for the outstanding high school and elementary school musicals and productions. Philippa was honored in 2009 as Citizen of the Year in Montrose. She was the second woman admitted to the local Rotary and its first female president. She helped found and run the Rotary Leadership Camp for Girls for a decade.
