Philip Q. MichalFormer Crawfordsville Mayor Philip Q. Michal, 77, died on October 9, 2017, at Bickford Cottage in Crawfordsville. He met and married his wife Judith Lynn (nee Price) Michal while at Purdue University. Phil and Judy were married on June 9, 1963; they celebrated 54 years of marriage and three sons.He was born on May 15, 1940, to Robert and Doris (nee Yost) Michal and lived in Valparaiso, IN. After the family moved to rural Jasper County north of Rensselaer, he attended and graduated from Fair Oaks Twp. School. He then went on to Purdue University where he was a member of Farmhouse fraternity. He graduated from Purdue with his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1964.Dr. Michal and his family moved to Montgomery County in 1965 where he had a veterinary practice in the Wingate area. In 1969 he built a clinic, Northwest Veterinary Hospital, just outside Crawfordsville and continued his veterinary practice there until he retired in 2013. He also served 14 years on the Montgomery County Board of Health, 10 years on the Crawfordsville City Council, and three full terms as the mayor of Crawfordsville from 1988 until 2000. While mayor he served on and chaired the Solid Waste District Committee for West Central Indiana and was an active participant in the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns.Phil was also an active volunteer for several community and charitable organizations including:member and past president of the Crawfordsville Kiwanis Club; member, elder and lay leader at First Christian Church; volunteer court appointed special advocate for juveniles in the Montgomery County court system; teacher friend for the Crawfordsville Community School District; mentor as part of the Youth Service Bureau Juvenile Mentoring Program; and Red Coat at Franciscan Alliance Hospital in Crawfordsville.In addition, he has been very involved in raising awareness of and funds for combatting world hunger as a member and chair of the Montgomery County Church World Service/CROP committee. He also served as a member and chair of the state CROP committee. He helped to lead and participated in 30 Montgomery County CROP hunger walks.He also has been a participant in two mission trips to Haiti, one to Jamaica, and nine to the Navajo reservation in New Mexico.  His many years of public service, leadership and volunteerism were recognized in 2014 by then Governor Mike Pence with a Sagamore of the Wabash Award, the second highest civilian honor in the state of Indiana.Phil loved people and animals. He enjoyed fishing with his brother, sons, and nephews; traveling-especially on the train; learning about the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln; spending time with family, and genealogy.Mayor Michal is survived by his beloved wife Judy; son David (Leigh Anne), Madison, AL; son Rich (Susan), Indianapolis; son Chris (Tiffany), LeClaire, IA; sister Maureen (Robert), Schultz DeMotte; brother James, Rensselaer; mother-in-law Kathleen (nee Cohee) Price, Frankfort; twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Doris Michal.Visitation will be on Friday, October 13, from 5:00-8:00 PM at First Christian Church in Crawfordsville. There will be private graveside services. On Saturday, October 14, all are welcome to a memorial service at First Christian Church at 1:00 PM followed by a reception from 2:00-4:00 PM in Fellowship Hall at the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in the Mayor's memory can be made to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund, Rock Steady Boxing of Brownsburg (Fighting Back Against Parkinson's Disease), or CWS/CROP.
