Paul R. SmollenMANSFIELD: Paul R. Smollen, 84, of Mansfield passed away December 24, 2016 at Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital.Paul was born on March 18, 1932 in Mansfield to John and Anna (Loksa) Smollen. He attended St. Peter's schools as a young man and was a member of St. Mary of the Snows Catholic Church. Paul was a veteran of the
United States Marine Corps and proudly served during the
Korean War where he was awarded the
Purple Heart Medal. He retired from Ohio Brass with 46 years of service and was a member of the American Legion. The most important thing to Paul was his family, especially his love and support of his grandchildren, as he attended and enjoyed many concerts, plays, performances of any type, as well as going to all of their sporting events. He was an avid golfer for many, many years and also enjoyed bowling.Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Phyllis (Schmidt) Smollen; children Nick (Lorri) Smollen of Mansfield, Tom (Michelle) Smollen of Lucas, Paula Smollen of Lorain and Philip (Kim) Smollen of Lucas; grandchildren: Angie (Justin) Crank, Abby (Frank) Zalar, Daniel (Brooke) Smollen, Matthew Smollen, Amanda "Nina" Smollen, Joe (Sarah) Joyce, Jacob (Meghan) Strickler, Jon Strickler, Juliann Strickler, Nate Smollen, Emily Smollen and Andrew Smollen; 7 great-grandchildren plus one on the way; a sister Mary Ann (Bob) Herlihy; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his five brothers and two sisters.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's or St. Peter's Church.Friends may call at Herlihy-Chambers Funeral Home, 173 Park Ave West, on Thursday from 2-4 pm & 6-8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1pm Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church with Fr. Jeremy Miller officiating, followed by military honors from the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Burial will follow in Mansfield Catholic Cemetery.
