May the Road Rise to Meet You

Olive Gabriel Bernadette Duggan Patrick passed away October 6, 2019 in Houston,Texas at the age of 86.

Born in Dublin, Ireland to Mariah (nee Cannon) and Thomas Duggan. Her childhood was a tumultuous time filled with bombings, war rations, and the early loss of her father. Olive had extreme love for her homeland, fondly reminiscing of the beauty of Eire, bicycling through the mountains, hikes, picnics, and strolling through rose filled gardens.

Olive arrived in California during Hollywood’s Golden Era, filled with glamour and movie stars. At Brentwood S&L, she worked in Escrow writing mortgages as the city of Los Angeles developed.

In 1963, Olive met Tommy Ray Patrick of Forrest/St Francisville, Louisiana. Falling deeply in love, they were married in Santa Monica 8 weeks later. Despite being 7 yrs his senior, Tommy going overseas in the US Navy and their different religious background, they overcame and remained in love throughout their 56+ years together.

The couple moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where Olive continued her work in Real Estate. Becoming a stay at home mom when Holly Leigh was born in 1968 followed by Sylvia Elizabeth in 1970. Both will always be thankful for the education they received, as well as, the hard work and unconditional love that went into making them believe in themselves, their choices and the power of love.

Olive remained a devout Catholic, teaching Sunday school at Our Lady Of Mercy and as an active member of the Legion of Mary in Baton Rouge.

Always putting her children first, when Tommy Ray’s job took him to Houston, Olive stayed in Baton Rouge until her younger daughter, Sylvia, could also graduate from Episcopal High School.

In the Clearlake area of Houston, she continued helping others. She developed a love of bird watching and making her surroundings a place they enjoyed.
Olive took pride in her home, her family and her appearance, even getting dental braces at age 70.

In 2009, Olive was diagnosed with Lymphoma, but against the odds, under the care of Dr. Hagemeister at MD Anderson, became a cancer survivor.

Olive would say “a woman is only as old as she looks”, and few people realized she was 86. She was in good health and spirits, her passing was unexpected and the void left is immense.

Survived by: Husband of 56 years, Tommy Ray Patrick, residing in Zachary, La; Daughter Holly L Patrick and partner of 25 yrs. Joshua Goodman from Israel (Los Angeles, CA); Daughter Sylvia E Patrick (divorced, BR/Gonzales La) ; sisters in law Barbara Duggan (NY/Colorado) and Joyce Duggan (Dublin, Ireland), numerous nieces and nephews; and grand-dog Motek (L.A. who will never forget The cheese lady)

Preceded in death by brothers Thomas, Brenden, Desmond {Dublin) and Fergus Duggan (NY) and sisters Nora Virtue, Margaret McDermott, Eileen McDonel, Joan Sexton (Dublin) and Hazel Williams (England). In-laws James Ivy Patrick and Marine Patrick (St Francisville)

Olive embraced the world, never meeting a stranger, making a lasting impression on all she shared stories with. Olive, may God keep you in the palm of His hand until we meet again.

At Olive’s request, no service will be held and her wishes of cremation honored. The family is thankful for the condolences, but declines flowers and donations.
