Olga Katharina Westman (nee Paulsen)Of Kindersley, SK passed away on December 29, 2016 at the age of 90 years. Olga "Ollie" was the first child of Nick and Elsa Paulsen, a German immigrant couple. She was born on August 18, 1926 on the Berenik farm home near Hawarden, SK. Ollie is survived by her 8 children, Rod (Anne), Ross (Karen), Craig (Pat), Nick (Ruth), Brian (Caroline), Della (Mark Stumborg), Gayle (Garth MacDonald), and Lyle (Nadine); as well as 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sisters, Lillian Dodds and Ruth (Stan) Rendall; and her sisters-in-law, Dorothy Westman and Grace Paulsen; as well as several cousins in Germany. She was predeceased by her parents, Nick and Elsa Paulsen; husband, George; son, Dwayne; grandsons, Kevin and Mark; daughter-in-law, Karen; sister, Hilda; brother, Harold; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. As a young child, German was Ollie's first language. She began to speak English when she entered school at age 7. She attended Cherry Dale country school and completed her grade 12 in Strongfield, SK. After high school, Ollie went to Robertson Secretarial school and was proud to be a stenographer. While working in Saskatoon at DVA (Department of Veterans Affairs), she met George Westman at the Victory Convention Dance at the Bessborrough Hotel in Saskatoon on Tuesday, November 27, 1945 and they were married on April 23, 1948. George and Ollie started their married life on their farm South of Plenty. They were warmly welcomed by the community of Plenty and surrounding communities such as Brock, and Stranraer, and often expressed how lucky they felt to raise their family in this area. In addition to farming for many years, George and Ollie were the Postmasters in Plenty. About 7 years after George's passing, Ollie moved to Kindersley where she remained until her passing. She was active in all aspects of community life in Plenty and continued some of these involvements in Kindersley. She was a conscientious and diligent worker, being a member and/or on the executive of many organizations throughout the years. These included the United Church Board and Presbytery, the UCW, the Plenty and Kindersley Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Plenty Curling Club, and various sports organizations. She was extremely dedicated to her family and their needs, helping when a grandchild was born, or when she felt the family needed a boost. She often had a trunk full of food when she came to visit, including pies, pickles, cookies and a casserole of some kind. Ollie was tireless in all aspects of her life and always had time to help friends and neighbors in the community. She was a fabulous gardener and cook, and had a unique ability to make a delicious meal out of scraps from the fridge or rejected vegetables from the local store. She was skilled at canning and freezing huge amounts of fruits and vegetables to provide for her family and friends. She enjoyed having extras around our home, sometimes late into the night, which may have included friends of her children, new teachers, hockey players, or her curling friends who she had a great time with. She had a unique natural class and a zest for life, always enthusiastic to try new things and game for anything. She enjoyed people, leaving those she met feeling valued and appreciated. She enjoyed playing sports such as softball and curling, and loved to dance and play bridge and cribbage. She was an avid participant in various drama productions and dinner theatres, which she enjoyed so much. She also loved to travel, and had many awesome trips throughout the years. Mostly she treasured her many trips to her family's original home in Germany. She was an avid sports and activities fan, watching her own children and grandchildren with pride, and enjoying many professional sports and arts performances throughout the years, especially the Riders and the Blue Jays. A celebration of Ollie's life will be held at St Paul's United Church, 502 Main Street, in Kindersley, SK on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to C.R.O.P.
