Jul 24, 1933 - Oct 28, 2017
This obituary is administered by:
Norman S. HumphriesLa Verkin, UTNorman S. Humphries, 84, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 28, 2017, in the town of his youth. His death was a result of a fall which fractured his hip five weeks prior. During that time, Dad expressed his love for each of his children, grandchildren and wife, Dianne. Norm was born on July 24, 1933 to James Allen & Lucille Sanders Humphries in La Verkin, Utah. He was a mischievous boy that loved to scare people with his pranks. His father taught him to drive his truck at the age of seven to help with work. Norman had to stand on the floor of the truck to reach the gas, brakes and gears. After graduating from Hurricane High in 1950, he worked for Utah's DOPT driving a DC 9 Caterpillar, crushing rock into gravel for constructing roads. For a steadier paycheck he began driving truck for Dubuque Meat Packing Co. from Dubuque, Iowa to California. On the return trip, he would haul produce from California or Arizona to Dubuque. In 1960, he started working for Jack Eves haling potatoes from Enterprise to Mexico to a potato chip plant. His next work adventure was for Elton Stout in Las Vegas operating a Caterpillar making house pads. When Stout got the contract to build the freeway south of Kanaraville, UT, Norm was once again home. To be home more, he next worked for Scholzen Products in Hurricane, where he drove diesel to California for supplies. Norman married Dianne H. Ball the first day of winter in 1979. Dianne brought with her three children, whom Norman claimed as his own, her love of cattle and bowling. Dad and Dianne bowled on a league over the next 15 years. They raised 4 cows that each provided milk for four calves at the same time. Norman and Dianne drove an 18 wheeler throughout the US. Dad had to retire from bowling and raising cattle in 1994 due to heart problems. Dad loved the outdoors. He always took his family out in the hills with his extended family for Easter and to go boating, cutting wood, or Pine Nut picking each fall. Norman is survived by his wife, Dianne, and his eight children: Jody (Ken) Ballard, Jill (Ty) Lioi, Bill (Jen) Noorlander, Steve (Betty) Humphries, Cindy (Rhaldo) Turner, Lanice (Roger) Odgen, Bradley Gubler, and Morgan (Della) Humphries. Norman has 32 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren. Norman was preceded in death by his parents Allen & Lucille, his two infant brothers, Allen & Bud, and his two sisters, Emma Rae and Carla Sawyer. The family expresses gratitude for Bishop Lee Hogan and neighbors Rene & Mayra Borjah, Greg & Renda Perdue, and close family friend Clay Campbell, for their watchful care over Norman. Funeral services will beheld 11:00 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2017 at the La Verkin LDS Stake Center.
