Outcalt, Norman Eugene (Gene) Norman Eugene Outcalt (Gene) passed away peacefully on August 11, 2017. He was born on February 24, 1923, in Crawford County, Illinois, to John and Minnie Outcalt. He was the youngest of 6 children including 2 sisters, Florence (Kramer) and Delilah (Wilson) and 3 brothers (Dale, Ralph and Mervin). His family moved to Montpelier, Indiana, where he attended and graduated from high school in 1940. After high school, he worked for the Montpelier Post Office until he joined the Air Force in 1943. During World War II, he was stationed in England with the 8th Air Force, 423rd squadron of the 306th Bomber group and completed 30 missions over Germany in the B-17 as bombardier and navigator. He was wounded in service and received the Purple Heart and Air Medal for Exceptional Meritorious Achievement. He married Elizabeth Ann Neff on February 2, 1944. They had 4 children: Carol, Connie, Doug and Ann. They moved their family to Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1954 where Gene obtained a job with the Scottsdale Post Office. He retired from the postal service in 1978 after serving as the Scottsdale Assistant Post Master from 1963-1978. Gene was active in many civic organizations including the Elk's Lodge, the Masons , the South Scottsdale Little League and Los Arcos Methodist Church. He served as the Exalted Ruler for the Scottsdale Elk's lodge in 1981. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth, his parents and siblings and grandson Aaron Outcalt. He is survived by his four children: Carol Devine (Pat), Connie Outcalt (Larry Ledbetter), Doug Campos/Outcalt (Frances), Ann Eisentraut (Dale), 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his second wife of 17 years, Sybil, her two children, Carol Uhland and Dave Masterson, and their families. Known for his friendly, outgoing and upbeat personality as well as his love for playing cards and cribbage, Gene was loved by all and will be missed by family and friends. A memorial service will occur at the Green Acres Mortuary on Saturday, August 19.
