Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 12, 2013 at the Gibson Pentecostal Holiness Church officiated by Pastor Joel Quick and Pastor Bo Grooms. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Cemetery.
Newman was born on Oct. 12, 1924 in Robeson County, son of the late Newman Emmit Jernigan and Caro Lockey Jernigan. He was the husband of 62 years to the late Hazel Jacobs Jernigan. He was a proud WWII United States Army veteran awarded two Bronze Star Medals and the Purple Heart Medal for his bravery and service. He worked as a carpenter and farmer before retiring. Newman was a lifetime member of the Disabled Veterans Association and a charter member of the Gibson Fire Department. He was a member of the Gibson Pentecostal Holiness Church and enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting and sharing time with his family.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by sons Robert and Cecil Jernigan, brothers Oliver "O.J." Jernigan and Culberth "Doc" Jernigan, and sisters Nunice Jernigan Sweatt and Clare Nitti.
Mr. Jernigan is survived by his children Jerry Jernigan and wife Mae of Laurinburg, Richard Jernigan and wife Shirley of Rockingham, and daughter Melissa "Moose" Jernigan of Laurinburg, sister Lois Ellis of Plainfield, Ind., 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 11 at Richard Boles Funeral Service.
