Nancy StuartStaunton, VANancy Griffin Herring Stuart, 87, a loving mother and devoted friend too many, passed away on October 10, 2017 at Birch Gardens Assisted Living in Staunton, VA. Her absence will be greatly felt by all who loved her. Nancy was born on April 26, 1930 in Annapolis, MD to the late Captain George Griffin Herring Jr., USN Retired, USNA Class of 1921 and Frieda Margaret (Ball) Herring of Astoria, OR. She graduated from Annapolis High School in 1946 and Mary Washington College in 1950. She then married Lt. Thomas R. Stuart USMC, USNA Class of 1951 on December 8, 1951 at the US Naval Academy Chapel. After a distinguished U.S. Marine Corps career, Colonel and Mrs. Stuart resided in Alexandria, VA where Nancy enjoyed her volunteer work at Vinson Hall in McLean, VA and as a docent at The Carlyle House in Old Town Alexandria. Eventually Tom and Nancy returned to their treasured Annapolis, MD where Nancy enjoyed serving as a docent at the historic William Paca House and as a volunteer on the USNA Chapel Flower Committee. Tom and Nancy greatly enjoyed their years together in and around the U.S. Naval Academy. Nancy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Tom; and her brother, Captain George Griffin Herring III, USN, Retired, USNA Class of 1957. She is survived by her sister, Jane Herring McMahon of Harrisonburg, VA; her daughter, Anne Stuart Spencer and husband, Tim, of Staunton, VA; and her son, Jerome C. Stuart II and wife, Sandy of Carlisle. In addition, Nancy is survived by five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. We are forever grateful for her devoted love and generosity. A private service will be held at the U.S. Naval Academy Columbarium at a future date.
