Lewis, Nancy J.Nancy Jane Lewis died of natural causes on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 while peacefully lounging in her favorite chair for watching Brewers games. She is survived by her six children, Claire (Leo) Wojcechowskyj of Sarasota, Florida; John of Miami Beach, Florida; Peter (Hyun Kim) of St. Paul, Minnesota; David (Eleonora) of Chico, California; Rebecca (Richard) Niday of Rhododendren, Oregon; Andy (Alison) of Eugene, Oregon; and her six grandchildren, Jason, Alex and Steven Wojcechowskyj; Alana Lewis; and Nathan and Amelia Lewis. She is also survived by her brother, Bill Spengemann, his wife Sycha, and their sons, Joaquin and Pascal.Nancy was born on August 11, 1930 in San Jose, California. She was a straight-A student in the San Jose public school system, and did equally well at UC Berkeley and Stanford University School of Nursing. While working as a surgical nurse at Stanford Hospital in San Francisco, she participated in one of the first open heart surgeries. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Jack, on a beach in Carmel, California. They were married on April 7, 1956. Through Jack's career in the beer industry, the growing family migrated to Milwaukee in 1963, living in Shorewood until 1971. The family then moved to Sheboygan when Jack purchased the Schlitz distributorship and started Lewis Distributing Company. And here Nan remained for the next 44 years, assisting in the business; managing the household of a hard-working husband, six independent children and a like number of unruly pets; and becoming fully absorbed in the many volunteer opportunities of her adopted home town.It is sometimes easy to overlook the points of light among us. Nancy was one of those points of light - one that shined long ago as Another Mother for Peace protesting the Vietnam War, as a volunteer with no desire for recognition at the Literacy Council, and most recently as a Meals on Wheels volunteer, Food Pantry volunteer, and devoted Friend of the Mead Public Library. That loving light also helped her beautiful garden grow, and bound her to her many friends, young and old. Now that light has gone to join that of her beloved husband Jack, who died one year ago. From all of us who benefitted from Nancy's wisdom, patience and guidance; who shared in her laughter, her wit, and her commitment to what she believed in; and who learned from her patience, love, understanding and strength, we thank you Nancy Lewis. God will bless you.Nancy will be cremated, and her and Jack's ashes will be spread together in California at a later date. The family observance will be private, but there will be a public gathering to celebrate Nancy's life on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Mead Public Library, Third Floor Loft.Memorial contributions in Nan's honor can be made to the Mead Public Library (c/o Pat Mueller), Meals on Wheels, The John Michael Kohler Arts Center, the Salvation Army Food Pantry, or a .Olson Funeral Home & Cremation Service has been entrusted with Nancy's arrangements.
