This obituary is administered by:
Mary McMullen Scruggs1923-2015Mary McMullen Scruggs, longtime Houston resident, passed away on Tuesday, the 1st of September, 2015, at the age of 92. She was born on the 15th of March, 1923, in Dallas, Texas.Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Hazel Dell Stewart McMullen and W. H. (Harvey) McMullen; and by her husband, W. Ray Scruggs, Jr.; and son, Donald Ray Scruggs. She is survived by her son, Bob Scruggs, his wife, Gail Scruggs; and by her sister, Drue McMullen Talley. She graduated from the University of Houston in 1947 with a B.B.A. degree, and after brief employment as secretary to Jack Valenti at Humble Oil & Refining Company, left the work force to raise her children. Mary returned to the University of Houston and received her teaching certificate in 1968 and her vocational certification qualifying her to teach Vocational Office Education in 1974. She was a Word Processing, Vocational Co-op Office Education and Business Education Teacher in the Houston Independent School District from 1969 to 1986.While an undergraduate at U of H, Mary was a founder of Beta Chi Sorority, serving two terms as its president, and later serving as president of its alumni association. Beta Chi subsequently merged into Chi Omega Sorority. Her son often described Mary as a "social butterfly" because of her energetic and enthusiastic interactions with everyone she met. A person could not remain a stranger very long in Mary's presence: she set out to learn about the other person if possible, but in no event was the conversation going to lag, even if she had to carry it by herself. Many people commented on her remarkable ability to converse with anyone.Mary was passionate about her family, friends and students. She was a member of Second Baptist Church, and her faith was very important to her. She loved music, and sang with The Houston Horizon Chorus, which is an award-winning women's chorus singing four-part harmony, barbershop style. During Mary's tenure, the chorus finished as high as 4th place in the Sweet Adelines International Competition. She also taught many students who won awards in skills competitions in her subjects, and she was highly regarded as a teacher by her students, peers and the employers who hired her students.A memorial service to celebrate Mary's life is to be conducted at ten o'clock in the morning on Saturday, the 19th of September, 2015, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive, in Houston, where Pastor Elliott Scott with Lifepath Church is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the adjacent grand foyer.A private interment was conducted at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston. In lieu of the customary remembrances, Mary requested that memorial donations in her memory be made to the C.T. Bauer College of Business, University of Houston, or the donor's favorite charity.
