Mary C. McGowanYorkMary C. McGowan, 91, died at her home on Saturday, April 8, 2017. She was the wife of the late Joseph E. McGowan. Her viewing will be held at the John W. Keffer Funeral Home at 2114 W. Market St. from 6 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017. The recitation of the rosary will begin at 6:30 p.m.A Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by the Rev. Daniel Richards, will be held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2017. A visitation will be held at 10 a.m. in the church. Her burial will be at the Holy Savior Cemetery.Mary was born on November 24, 1925 in Philadelphia, the daughter of the late Patrick and Ellen (McGarry) Nolan. She grew up in the townland of Aughlisnafin, Northern Ireland, the home of her maternal grandparents. She was a graduate of St. Mary's Catholic Training College in Belfast. Later, she was appointed Vice Principal of St. Mary's Boys School in New Castle, situated "where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea". She remained at that post until 1974 when she married and moved to York. Mary and her husband, Joe, maintained a close connection to family and friends in Ireland. An active member of St. Rose of Lima Church in York. Mary was a daily participant in the mass and was a member of the Legion of Mary for over 70 years. Mary is survived by her children, Rosanne M. McGowan, Eileen T. McGowan, Joseph H. McGowan and his wife, Carole, Daniel G. McGowan and his wife, Eileen, Christopher J. McGowan and his wife, Clare; grandchildren, Mary Colleen, Maureen, Brighid, Caitrin, Patrick, Meghan, Maura, MaryKate, Lynn, and Mary Frances; and nine beloved great-grandchildren. Mary is survived by her nieces, Maire Scullion and Sile McLean of Aughlisnafin, Northern Ireland. Mary was preceded in death by her three brothers, Gerald, Patrick and Brendan Nolan; and her son, Patrick T. McGowan and his wife, Eileen.
