WALLINGFORD - Mary Jean Vernon, 93, died Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016, at Mountain View Center in Rutland. She was born on Jan. 27, 1923, in Rutland, the daughter of Frank W. and Lola M. (Cunningham) Chapman. Ms. Vernon graduated from Rutland High School in 1941 and the Methodist Episcopal Hospital School of Nursing in 1944. She was not able to take her state board licensing exam until 10 years later, passing with a perfect score. She was employed for over 35 years at the Rutland Regional Medical Center, retiring in 1987 as the head of Critical Care. Survivors include her daughter, Diane Colvin of Wallingford; four grandchildren Karla Day, Julie Williams, Charles Baker and Eric Vernon; 14 great-grandchildren, two-and-a-half great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Karl R. Vernon, in 2000; a brother, Karl Chapman; and three sisters Ruth Lane, Elma Edwards and Bernice Maurice. Funeral services will be held 12 noon on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016, at the Wallingford-Aldous Funeral Home. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
