On February 23, 2017, she left her residence in Columbus, GA for her Heavenly home to join her family and friends that preceded her in death, including her parents, John J. Riley and Eunice Myrtle Compton Riley; her sisters, Pauline Elizabeth Riley Russell and husband, Tennis R. Russell, Kathleen Norris Riley Jordan and husband, Jim Jordan; and twin sister, Martha Inez Riley Anderson and husband, Roger Anderson; her brother, Victor Talmadge Riley; and her half-brothers, Thomas Hilary Riley, Cameron Vaughn Riley and John Hershel Riley. She is survived by her younger sister Neida Laverne Riley Leak, who was married to husband Bill Leak (deceased). Mary was faithfully married to deceased husband Frank Albert Wheeler of Knoxville, Tennessee for 43 years, and they have a son, James R. "Butch" Wheeler (Columbus, GA), who is married to Georgie Y. Wheeler, and they have three children: son, Sam Sumpter, Jr. married to Gina Sumpter (Cataula, GA), with children Chelsea and John Tyler Sumpter; daughter, Kristie M. Sumpter Niette married to Michael Niette (Butler, GA), with children Alayna and Solomon; and son, James Franklin "Jamie" Wheeler and wife, Samantha S. Wheeler (Cataula, GA). Mary tremendously enjoyed her time with numerous nieces and nephews especially Joy Bagley, Kaye and Bob Garrard, Rhett and Pam Leak, Susan and Steve Craft, Chris Leak and Jean Wheeler while being very close to Melissa Bailey. She is also survived by two step-sons, Bill and Don Wheeler and their families.Mary was a member of Rose Hill Church of Christ in Columbus, GA. While living in Knoxville, Tennessee, Mary was baptized and became a member of Laurel Avenue Church of Christ and later with husband Frank joined Karns Church of Christ, where he was baptized.Mary was raised in Arab, Alabama where the entire family lived on a farm and worked in the cotton fields and the vegetable gardens and she graduated from Arab High School. She worked in Loveman's department store in Birmingham, AL where she enjoyed selling shoes, which began her keen eye for fashion. During WWII along with many women of the time, she was employed in a munitions plant manufacturing field artillery shells. She later moved to east Tennessee, where she worked in Oak Ridge, TN and met her husband to be at K-25. She truly loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, and especially being a dedicated homemaker.Services will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at Highland Memorial Funeral Home and Cemetery starting with visitation from 1:00 to 1:30 PM and a Chapel service starting at 1:30 PM, with Reverend Tim Shoulders presiding, followed by graveside services. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Karns Church of Christ.
