Mary Josephine Coghlan Barth COLUMBIA - A resident of The Waterford at Columbia, Mary Josephine Coghlan Barth passed away peacefully on November 10, 2016 at the age of 93. Mary is survived by her children, Mary Jones (Tom), Lawrence Barth (Gwen), Kathleen Ortlund (Jeff), Jane Blackmon (Harry), and Robert Barth (Donna); thirteen grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Kathleen; brothers, Lawrence and Hugh; and grandson, Michael. She was born on April 13, 1923 in Dublin, Ireland to the late Mary and Lawrence Coghlan. Her family immigrated to the United States in 1928 and settled in New York City, New York. Mary was married to Frank Barth for 70 years before his death in 2011. She traveled with him throughout Europe during the time they were stationed in Linz, Austria. While living in the former Canal Zone, Mary had the opportunity to visit the surrounding cities in Panama. She loved to travel making trips with family and friends to Ireland, China, and Canada and throughout America as well as cruising in the Caribbean. She retired from the federal government after 30 years with most of her career spent helping veterans at the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center. Mary enjoyed playing bridge, entertaining, cooking, gardening, and playing tennis with her husband. She was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church as a member of the Altar Guild and St. Bridget's Guild. Memorial services will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 3600 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205, on November 12, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.
