Martin H. MayerhoferOct. 25, 1930 - Oct. 29, 2016GRANGER - Martin H. Mayerhofer, 86, of Granger, passed away on October 29th in the Kindred Hospital of Mishawaka. Martin was born on October 25, 1930, to Martin J. and Angeline (Sowadski) Mayerhofer, the first of four sons. On his 21st birthday he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Korea for 18 months, where he served in the 51st Battalion Signal Corps. He was honorably discharged and returned home to Elmhurst, IL, in 1953. He had many hobbies but he enjoyed his racing pigeons. His birds won many trophies and diplomas. He worked as a foreman at Edison Folding Cartons in Chicago, IL, until 1979. He then moved to Niles, Michigan, where for 5 years (1979 - 1984) he helped his brother and sister-in-law operate a motel. They then purchased the Quality Inn and Suites of Mackinaw City, MI, which they operated through 2004. Marty enjoyed helping at church with bingo, he took great pride in the flower gardens at the Quality Inn, he loved to sit on the beach in Mackinaw while watching the ships and ferry boats on the Straits of Mackinaw. He was known as ‘Uncle Marty' to many children of his friends. He was also called ‘Uncle Marty' by the Clay High School Girls Swim team from 1994 through 1998. He attended every meet to cheer them on. Marty's greatest joy came from spending time with his family.Martin is survived by his brothers, George (Patricia) Mayerhofer of New Glarus, WI, and Harry (Noreen) Mayerhofer of Granger. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Natalie (Neil) Mayerhofer Delaney of Granger, Tiffany (John) McGettigan of Falls Church, VA, George (Trina) Mayerhofer of Madison, WI, Greg Blevins of Monroe, WI, Kimberly Blevins of Mt. Horeb, WI, Kathy (Frank) Olesiak of Glen Ellyn, IL, Debbie (Mark) Thornton of Villa Park, IL, Robert (Paulette) Mayerhofer of Wausau, WI, Barbara (Frank) Valvo of Villa Park, IL, Judy (Dan) Pearson of Winfield, IL, Maryanne (Todd) Heinrich of Grain Valley, MO, and Christine Mayerhofer of Chicago, IL; along with many great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. Marty was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Angeline Mayerhofer, and his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Barbara Mayerhofer.A service celebrating Martin's life will be held at a later date. Bubb Funeral Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.Martin loved his family completely, always there to help. As a son, brother, uncle and friend he was unsurpassed!
