In loving memory of Mark Socin, age 61, of Oscoda and formerly of Black River, peacefully passed away on Monday, June 8, 2015. He was born on July 26, 1953 in Detroit to Harry and Dolores Socin (nee Rodriguez). After graduating high school, Mark continued with Maritime classes in order to fulfill his dream of being a man of the seas. He served as a First Mate while traveling international water, the Great Lakes and rivers. Mark held several licenses including: Master of Steam and Motor Vessels of 550 gross ton, Third Mate on any vessel, First Class Pilot of the Great Lakes, and Master Seaman. To add to his list of accomplishments, Mark also piloted tug boats from Ohio to Michigan. His position as ferryboat captain for Isle Royale State Park was one he so enjoyed. Mark's retirement dream plan was to keep sailing those pristine waters as long as possible. He enjoyed any waterway, the outdoors, fishing anywhere at any time, but especially on the AuSable River. Mark enjoyed the quiet time in the mornings watching the sunrise and the peacefulness of being outside day or night. He is survived by his mother, Dolores Socin; daughter, Julia Ann Brown; and grandsons, Lucas Kingsley Knight and Samuel Michael Brown. Mark is also survived by three sisters, Sharon (Gregory) Kreger and family, Kathryn (Michael) DiTrapani and family and Mary (Jason) Schmitz and family; and brother, Matthew Socin. A short memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 21 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion Annex, 34 South State St., Oscoda. Condolences may be shared at www.bureshfuneralhomes.com.
