Marie Y. SzucsJuly 7, 1925 - Nov. 14, 2016SOUTH BEND - Marie Y. Szucs, 91, of South Bend passed away peacefully on Monday, November 14, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka surrounded by members of her loving family.She was born on July 7, 1925, to the late Octave Van Wassenhove and Irma (Dayzeele) VanWassenhove in Mishawaka and was a lifelong resident of the South Bend/ Mishawaka area. Marie had one sibling, her older brother Joseph, who is also deceased.On September 18, 1948, she married the love of her life, Edward W. Szucs, Sr., who passed away on February 4, 2000. She is survived by two sons, Edward, Jr. of Mishawaka, and James of South Bend. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Peter, Michael, Scott, Jimmy, Michelle, Noah, and Maxx, and three great-grandchildren: Grant, Brady, and Elijah.Marie was a graduate of Mishawaka High School and was active in many of her class's reunion activities throughout the years.After graduating from high school, Marie was employed by Ball Band of Mishawaka as a secretary. She also was a Crossing Guard for the South Bend Community School Corporation for twenty-four years, guarding and protecting children from Edison and McKinley schools.Marie was a longtime parishioner at St. Anthony de Padua Church. She donated her time cooking and baking for various events that are sponsored by the church.Marie was devoted to her family. She maintained a longtime tradition by cooking dinner for everyone on Sunday afternoon. Her cooking and baking will be remembered and cherished by her loving family.The family would like to thank the staff of Holy Cross Care and Rehabilitation Center for their care and kindness during Marie's stay there preceding her death.Family and friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, November 21, at Welsheimer Funeral Home, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Funeral services will be held at St. Anthony de Padua Church, 2310 E. Jefferson Blvd., at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 22.
