Margaret Solomon Obituary

Nov 19, 1921 - Mar 20, 2014

This obituary is administered by:

Margaret Solomon, age 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 20, 2014, in El Paso, Texas, at the home of her sister, Bette Azar. She was surrounded by her loving family while being greeted by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Margaret was born on November 19, 1921, in LaGrange, Georgia, as the fifth born of six siblings. She loved her family above all. She shared a special bond with her parents, four sisters and one brother. She was a loving and doting Aunt who loved her numerous nieces and nephews as if they were her own children.

Margaret was the daughter of the late Ellis Solomon and Kamily Maloof Solomon, the Founders of Solomon's Department Store.

Margaret was a Charter member of St. Peters Catholic Church and the Ladies Altar Society. The four years she spent in El Paso, she attended St. Patrick's Cathedral. She was a devout Christian all her life and it was evident in her daily way of living.

After graduation from LaGrange High School she joined the family business. It was with great pride that her father welcomed all of his six children to participate in the company. He had the utmost integrity and wanted to instill it in his children. They all participated in making Solomon's a bustling and welcoming department store which is still in existence after over 75 years.

Margaret and her siblings all lived during the Greatest Generation during World War II. During that time, Margaret volunteered for the American Red Cross in LaGrange by preparing bandages for wounded veterans. She also joined the Ladies of St. Peter's Church to meet and greet the Army soldiers from Ft. Benning who came to LaGrange to attend the Catholic services followed by a brunch.

In 1969, after twenty years of service in the business and the death of her father, she and her sister Martha joined their sister Anne in establishing Anne's Dress Shop. Margaret was a gracious, gentle woman who always greeted each person with a kind word and a beautiful smile that lit up a room.

Margaret and her sister Martha loved their home and graciously served their guests with joy and kindness. Upon Martha's death, Margaret chose to move to El Paso, Texas and live her last years with her sister and family. Bette's friends became Margaret's friends. They welcomed her to Texas with a lovely luncheon. She was a hit with her Southern accent and charm. Although she was very happy with her family, she missed LaGrange and her friends there. She talked about "back home" daily. She subscribed to the LaGrange newspaper until her eye sight began to fail. Her heart was always in LaGrange.

Margaret was a devoted daughter and sister. She will be forever missed, especially by her surviving sister, Bette Azar and her husband Phillip. She will also be missed by nieces Pam Hunsaker, Peggy Powers and nephew Phillip Azar Jr. who loved her and diligently helped care for her. While living in LaGrange she was lovingly cared for by her nephew Mark Mike (Ute).

Margaret was predeceased by her parents and three sisters, Elizabeth Jabaley, Anne Mike and Martha Solomon. She is survived by her sister Bette Azar (Phillip) of El Paso, Texas, and one brother, Charlie Solomon of LaGrange and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service in celebration of Margaret's life will be held at a later date in LaGrange in the Solomon Family Plot. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peter's Catholic Church or Hospice of LaGrange.

You can to the family or in memory of Margaret Solomon.
