Margaret Anne Schafer Obituary

Nov 27, 1928 - Dec 07, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Schafer, Margaret Anne Margaret Anne Schafer of Scottsdale, AZ passed away on December 7, 2016. She was born on November 27, 1928 to Charles and Margaret Fee in Cincinnati, OH and had a younger sister, Cecilia, all who predeceased her. Although most of her childhood was spent in Ohio, her father was a medical doctor with the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's and they moved frequently throughout the Pacific Northwest and California. In June 1949, she graduated from Ohio State University and in the same week at St. James' Episcopal Church Columbus, OH, she married the love of her life, Glen who preceded her in death in 2011. Margaret Anne is survived by her six children: Peggy Gray, Sue Greenberg (Steve), Charles, Neal, Jean Leslie and Heather Rice (Joe); 11 grandchildren and 5 great-granddaughters, a niece, Mary Wilson, many cousins and lifelong friends. The family moved to Scottsdale, AZ in 1965 where they were involved in many church and community activities. Margaret most recently attended Christ Church Anglican in Phoenix and was also a long-time parishioner of Christ Church of the Ascension, Paradise Valley where she was president of the Episcopal Church Women, co-directress of the Altar Guild and Sunday school teacher. Margaret was also active in her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, the teachers' sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma and was a member of the D.A.R. She was a Bluebird/Campfire Girls leader, an avid bridge player winning many marathons over the years and involved with the East Valley Tellers of Tales. In 1968, Margaret attended ASU to obtain her AZ teaching certificate and became a homebound and substitute teacher in the Scottsdale school district where she also volunteered after retirement. She was one of the last members of the Mary Martha Guild and a faithful participant of the Order of St. Luke, St. Barnabas-on-the-Desert. Margaret was the last survivor of "Girls Friendly", formed along with Pat Farrell, Marilyn Dawson, Phyllis Drake and Virginia Bakewell who met with each other, their husbands and families to evolve into a long-time extended family in the Valley. Margaret Anne was an exemplary wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many who will be cherished and remembered by all the lives she touched. She set the bar high for being a true lady of "The Greatest Generation." A celebration of her extraordinary life with interment to follow in the memorial garden will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017, 11 AM at Christ Church of the Ascension, 4015 E. Lincoln Dr., Paradise Valley, AZ, officiated by the Rev. Chris Schutte, rector of Christ Church Anglican. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Christ Church Anglican, 5011 N. 20th St., Phoenix, AZ 85016, , 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014 and Arizona Friends of Talking Books, 1030 N. 32nd St., Phoenix, AZ 85015.
