Schlies, MabelMabel Schlies, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt, mentor, and friend, passed away on Friday, November 14. She was 100 years, seven months and seven days old . Her determination, personal strength and sense of humor, nurtured by deep faith, made Mom an enviable example of how to live life. She was truly an inspiration to all who knew her.Mabel was born on April 7, 1914 to James and Antonia Cherney in the town of Monpelier, Kewaunee County, WI. She married Joseph Schlies on October 30, 1934 at St. Joseph Church in Pilsen, WI. Together they modeled love and commitment for 62 years. They owned and operated a dairy farm in the Pilsen/Stangelville area until 1969. They then moved to Green Bay and started Schlies Tire, where Mabel was affectionately referred to as the "tire lady". They worked side by side until Joe passed away on December 31, 1996. Mabel was a lifelong learner and always active. She loved to read whenever time permitted. She also enjoyed mushroom and berry picking, baking and sewing before macular degeneration took much of her sight. In their earlier years Joe and Mabel enjoyed traveling in their camper or by plane and were always ready for a new adventure. Mabel was a woman of great faith, praying the rosary daily and listening to Sunday Mass on the radio when she could no longer go to church. She loved listening to the Packers games but most of all, she loved her family and kept up with their activities. She was a breast cancer survivor who lived a long, full and productive life. Her strong faith gave her the strength to overcome life's adversities, the insight to see the good in people and the kindness to make everybody feel welcome in her home. Mabel was a member of Western Fraternal Organization, the Czechs of Norman, the Wisconsin Czechs and St. Philip the Apostle Parish.Mabel leaves behind, in the care of each other now, two sons and daughters-in-law: Kenneth and Pearl Schleis and Larry and Diane Schlies.
