This obituary is administered by:
Thome, Mabel M.Mabel M. Thome, 97, Green Bay, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April, 27, 2017. She was born on May 19, 1919, in Elyria, Ohio to the late Mathias and Amelia (Bins) Thome. Her family moved from Elyria to Green Bay after her high school graduation. After working for Woolworth's, W.T. Grant, and the Grand Union Coffee Company, Mabel passed the Civil Service exam on her first attempt and went to work at the Brown County Treasurer's office. She served as account examiner in the Treasurer's office before being elected Brown County Treasurer in 1968—the first woman to hold the position. Mabel took great pride in her work and was re-elected six times before retiring, then served a term as the President of the Wisconsin County Treasurer's Association.Mabel was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Parish and the Altar Society, and a volunteer Bookkeeper at Holy Martyrs of Gorcum prior. She actively served the community as a two-term Regent for the Daughters of Isabella, an active member of Altrusa Club where she served with many friends helping to expand and develop the newest Altrusa House, and through St. Vincent Hospital Auxiliary where she was on the Board to start Meals on Wheels and delivered patient mail for years. She also championed literacy, serving with the Literacy Council and Friends of the Library. She also enjoyed teaching immigrant Hmong mothers to read, write and speak English. She was a talented and enthusiastic gardener, drawing birds and family alike to her beautiful yard. Her love for growing and community naturally connected her to the Green Bay Botanical Garden in its early stages as a member of the Board, and she helped to establish and grow the year-round destination. She was an enthusiastic Greeter upon its opening and made Legacy contributions including the Mabel Thome Fountain and Mabel Thome & Madeline Centen Patio/Terrace. Family and friends knew her as the best cheerleader around for the gardens. In addition to gardening, Mabel's passions included music, travel, and lifelong learning. She supported Civic Music programs, attended Music in the Park, musicals and plays at St. Norbert and UWGB, and made special trips to Milwaukee and Chicago for performances. She visited all 50 states in her lifetime, including driving to Alaska, and combined travel with learning through Elder Hostel adventures with her friend, Madeline Centen, in addition to Learning in Retirement at UWGB.She enjoyed being an active sports fan, supporting the Packers and local college basketball including the UWGB Phoenix Women's team and the Men's program, especially when an Anderson was playing. She loved baseball and would fill out the scorecards at Milwaukee Braves games. Mabel enjoyed bowling, golf, and riding horses in the Baird's Creek and Schmidt Park areas.Mabel is survived by nieces and nephews: Carl and Marlee Thome, Naples, FL; Gregory and Nancy Thome, Pleasanton, CA; Dennis Thome, Green Bay; Kathleen and William Dombrowski, Roselle, IL; and Michelle and Michael Kaufman, Crivitz, WI; as well as several great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman (Helen) Thome, Vernon (Eulalia) Thome; best friend, Madeline Centen; and niece, Marjorie Black.Friends may call at SS.
