Ray, Louise C.Louise C. Ray, 93, went to "dwell in the house of the Lord forever" on November 1, 2016. A resident of Greenwich for 73 years, she passed peacefully at The NathanielWitherell Nursing Center. She was born on January 31, 1923 in Doswell, Virginia to the late Joseph E. Cornelius Jr. and Lucy A. Mines.Though greatly saddened by her passing because of the enormous void it has left in our hearts and lives, we are comforted by our treasured memories of her. Her legacy of love, commitment and service has touched, shaped and transformed all of our lives. She was, indeed, an amazing woman.Louise attended elementary school in Doswell, Virginia and graduated from The Hanover County Training High School in 1942. After graduation, she traveled to Greenwichwhere she lived with her Aunt Ellen. She worked in various jobs before becoming a Nurse's Aide at the Greenwich Hospital and later Secretary for the Maternity floor of theHospital. She retired from Greenwich Hospital after almost 40 years, in 1993.Louise met Reuben D. Ray Jr. (deceased in 2004) at a First Baptist Church of Greenwich service and they were married in 1947. They raised a family of three boys (Raymond deceased 1989) in their house on Davis Avenue. She was one of the oldest living activemembers of First Baptist Church of Greenwich, having served in several capacities, most notably on the student scholarship committee. She was very involved in a number of other community organizations, including the NAACP and The Greenwich Women's Civic Club.She is part of a very rich and bountiful lineage that spans 7 generations and dates back to the Cornelius family's early 1800 roots in Virginia. She is survived by her onlyremaining sibling, Dr. James Cornelius, Chesterfield, VA: two sons: Reuben D. Ray III, Weston, FL, Dennis C. Ray, Westport, CT: daughters-in-law, Sue J. Ray and KarineLaudun-Ray. She leaves nine grandchildren: Ebony, Raven, Reuben IV, Kemit, Desmond, Remi-Alain, Lexis-Olivier, Raphael and Celine. She also leaves six greatgrandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.Visitation will be held on Friday, November 11, 2016, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Gallagher's Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich. Funeral will be held on Saturday, November 12,2016 at First Baptist Church of Greenwich 11:00 a.m., 10 Northfield St., Greenwich.
