BURLINGTON - Age 91, passed away Monday, April 15, 2013 at Pine Brook Pointe. Burlington has lost someone who enjoyed a good cup of coffee, good conversation and a good laugh. A polka in the background started Lorraines feet a tapping. Lorraine was born on June 13, 1921, to Lawrence and Katherine Hegeman. Both parents died before Lorraine reached adulthood. She and her four sisters prided themselves on being able to stay together with no help from the outside. On May 16, 1942, Lorraine married Joseph Ehlen at St. Marys Catholic Church. Joseph died at the age of 59 which left a lot of time for a busy farmers wife. Many activities filled the extra time. Lorraine volunteered at St. Josephs School, the Burlington Hospital gift shop, St. Marys School cafeteria, and Mount Carmel. She was also always available to drive people into town. Lorraine particularly enjoyed traveling with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to places far and near. Lorraine is survived by her children; Kathy (Tom) Terry of Burlington, JoAnn (John) Vande Sand of Providence Forge, VA, Peggy Tymus of Burlington and Dan (Cathy) Ehlen of Elkhart Lake; a sister, Evelyn Kerkman of New Munster, sister-in-law, Gerry Ehlen of Burlington, and a brother-in-law, Bud Schoenberg of Lyons. Lorraine took every opportunity to talk about and show off her pictures of her 11 grandchildren; Todd (Melissa) Terry, Emily (Doug) Ihrke, Jeff (Amy) Vande Sand, Katherine (Charles) Destinon, Scott (Cindy) Vande Sand, John Tymus, Joseph (Kayla) Ehlen, Elizabeth Tymus, Scott Ehlen, Matthew Ehlen and J. B. Vande Sand and her 9 great-grandchildren; Mackenzie, Charlie, Scott, Meriwether, Brayden, Reese, Joella, Tymus, Ellie, Donovan and Brooklyn. Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, and son-in-law, Richard Tymus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Lyons with Rev. John Baumgartner officiating. Burial will follow at St. Josephs Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family at the CHURCH on Saturday, May 4, from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM. The family would like to express a thank you to Gentiva Hospice as well as a special thank you to Mary and all the Pine Brook staff for their love and care of mom over the past 6 years.
