LEWISBERRY Lewis J. Mummert, Jr., 91, passed away peacefully into eternal rest at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2014. He was the devoted husband of Frances E. Mummert for almost 70 years. Lewis was born on March 25, 1923, to the late Lewis and Elsie Mummert. He was born in and resided his entire life in Lewisberry. He graduated from the former Lewisberry High School and New Cumberland High School. After graduation, he worked at The Hellam Furniture Factory, the New Cumberland Army Depot, and the Mechanicsburg Army Depot. During
World War II, Lewis served as an aircraft pilot mechanic and supervisor and he specialized in B26 and B29 aircrafts. Before transferring to the Counter Intelligence Service, Lewis served as a crew chief on the B29. After discharge, Lewis started a very successful career with Nationwide Insurance, establishing an agency which he managed for over 40 years, and amassed numerous awards for his agency's performance. Lewis celebrated life by serving his community. He was a lifelong member of The Lewisberry United Methodist Church serving as the head of the first Building and Parsonage Committees, church trustee, teacher, and superintendent. For over 36 years, he was a member of the Lewisberry Borough Council and was Vice President of the Lewisberry Electric Authority. He was a member of the West Shore School Board Authority (Red Land and Cedar Cliff High Schools), a lifelong Lion's Club member, a scout leader, and a member of the Northern York County Sewer Authority and Zoning Board. He was also a founding member of the Annie E. Sterline Library, responsible for the reestablishment of the library in Lewisberry. Other than when serving his community, Lewis had many interests. He had a lifelong love of flying and airplanes and he enjoyed traveling, bow hunting, and reading. Most of all, he celebrated his love of his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his youngest sister, Betty Yinger; his loving wife, Frances E. (Basye) Mummert; their children, Alethia Sprenkle (and John), James (and Sheila), and Cynthia Imhoff (and Tim); their grandchildren, Daniel, Lauren, Mark, Rebecca, Joseph, Julia, Kris, and Hannah; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wilson; and sisters, Alice (Frank), Pearl (Bonner), and Arletta (Emminger). Lewis' life will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at Lewisberry United Methodist Church (address below) with the Rev. Jane Harrison, his pastor, officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Burial with military honors will be in Emanuel Cemetery, Lewisberry.
