Les H Medoff Obituary

Great Life Cut Short

Les was born in Chicago, grew up in the far south-side neighborhood of Jeffrey Manor. Attended Bowen High School, graduated in 1968. Went on to study at University of Illinois (Circle), Prairie State, and Governor's State. He worked for AT&T as an operator for 27 years, and also worked for the Cubs and White Sox as a beer vendor for more than 50 years. He loved working in the right field upperdeck at Wrigley Field as a beer man, and 2020 would have been his 53rd season at the park. He was well known to fans and colleagues as "Les the Beer Man" or the "Upperdeck Commisioner." Les unexpectedly passed away July 12, 2020, in Florida at age 69, in the home that he and his wife Carol had just purchased less than a year before. He is survived by Carol, his wife of 36 years, brother Corey (Sonja), nephew Shane, great niece Sydney, and mother-in-law Janice Clark. Preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Bernice, and his brother, Marshall.  Les was a huge sports fan and supported most of Chicago's teams, especially his beloved Cubs, which he "lived and died" with on a daily basis. 2016 was the year he had been waiting for his entire life and was totally thrilled with the Cubs' World Series victory. Les got to know many season ticket holders and his regular customers at Wrigley, and he maintained year-round contact with them.  After the Cubs won the 2016 Series, he spent days contacting all of his "people" from the park. These were some of the same people that he would give homemade banana bread that Carol would bake to thank them each year for supporting him during the season. He will be so missed by all of his family, many friends and co-workers at the ballpark. Family and friends plan a celebration of life for Les next year at Wrigley Field, if possible.  Les and Carol loved their dogs.  In lieu of flowers or cards, donations may be made to local animal shelters.
