Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 15th at Dakan Chapel with burial following at Canyon Hill Cemetery, Caldwell. Condolences may be shared at www.dakanfuneralchapel.com Leonard was born on April 1, 1927 in the middle of an unexpected snow storm in Todd County, South Dakota to Peter and Marie Vis. Marie Vis passed away three months later. These events forged the character of our Dad, giving him independence, fearlessness, determination and a great love of family. His first few years were spent with his maternal grandmother who only spoke Dutch, he was also farmed out to other families in the area as his father, a bachelor, was not able to care for a small child and his only sister Eleanor, was not old enough. Dad always spoke fondly of his years growing up near the South Dakota / Nebraska state line where he spent his youth assembling and disassembling machinery, racing his pony, and forming a strong work ethic. Leonard and Peter raised hogs, selling the operation out in 1946. One day, Leonard went to a party with several kids however, when he got there, there was no one there that could play the piano, and someone suggested one of the Noteboom girls could play. Leonard set off to fetch her and became immediately smitten, with the love of his life, Lorraine. They were married on February 7, 1946 and were fortunate to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary still very much in love. Lorraine's parents and sibling had moved from South Dakota to Idaho and the young couple soon followed.Leonard, began hauling milk for the Dairyman's Creamery in 1947. He took several odd jobs during this time to make ends meet, including a car salesman, carpenter and farm hand. In 1965, Leonard purchased the school buses in Middleton. The business grew from 6 buses to 40 under his leadership. Leonard enjoyed all the people he met in these businesses. He was interested in where someone grew up and would always try to find a common connection with any stranger. Leonard and Lorraine were baptized at the Caldwell First Christian Church in April 1972. Leonard enjoyed bowling, camping, traveling, and fishing. He loved family gatherings and nothing gave him greater pleasure than when we were all together, especially if there were homemade cookies and coffee present. Having been born on April Fool's Day, Dad loved to laugh, and especially enjoyed books by Patrick McManus, comedies such as Home Alone and western movies featuring John Wayne. His favorite April Fool's joke was, "What's that on your shirt?"Leonard leaves behind his wife, Lorraine, his son Steve (Elena) and his daughter Debra; grandsons Scott (Amy) Campbell, Doug (Frankie) Campbell, Nathan Vis, Travis (Allison) Williams and Zeb Williams; granddaughters Shantell (Matt) Mullanix, and Hailey Vis, great grandchildren, Dyllen (Breanne), Bryanna and Taylar Campbell, Taylor (Shawn) Miller, Cory, Trevin and Madden Mullanix, Malia and Brody Vis and Lucy Vis-Shaw, and great great-grandson Haydyn Campbell. Given Dad's great love of family, he leaves behind many extended family members, friends and people whose lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and his daughter Sheryl Campbell. The family would like to thank the Canyon West staff for all their caring and compassion during his stay. Donations may be made to the Caldwell Christian Church, 3207 E Ustick Rd, Caldwell, ID 83605; Middleton Athletics, 1538 Emmett Rd, Middleton, ID 83644; or .
