Lawrence "Larry" HochUrbandaleLawrence "Larry" Booth Hoch, 74, died peacefully at his home in Urbandale on October 22, 2016. A memorial service will be held at 11am, Friday, October 28, 2016 at Grace United Methodist Church, Des Moines. Private interment will be at McDivitt Grove Cemetery, Urbandale.Larry was born on August 8, 1942 in Adams, MA to the Reverend Clarence and Laura Booth Hoch. Rev. Hoch was a United Methodist Church minister, and served churches in Massachusetts, New York and Vermont.Larry graduated from high school in Montpelier, VT in 1959, and attended Syracuse University where he received a degree in math in 1963, and later a Master's degree in math from Rutgers University. In 1967 he took a job teaching math at Clarkstown, New York Central Schools, where he taught for 32 years until his retirement.Larry moved to Urbandale in 2004, and became extremely active in Grace United Methodist Church, serving on several committees over the years. He was an avid political 'junkie' and over the years collected many political buttons going back into the 1840's to the present. He also was an artist, and had done many artistic things in his home. He was on the Board of the Coronado condos, serving as treasurer for the organization.In 2001, Larry met his future husband, David Twombley, and in 2002 they had a Civil Union Ceremony in Bennington, VT. In 2005 Larry and David were asked by Lambda Legal to be a part of a lawsuit against the State of Iowa to bring marriage equality in Iowa; the unanimous decision of the Iowa Supreme Court established this right in 2009; Larry and David were married that fall and recently celebrated their 7th wedding anniversary.Larry will be greatly missed. He had many good friends everywhere he lived in his life. His sense of humor, his interest in helping others, and his love of life was unique.Lawrence Hoch is survived by his husband, David Twombley of Urbandale; daughter, Sarah Hoch of Denver, Colorado; son, Brian Hoch of Urbandale and their mother, Virginia Carle; a brother, Dan (Beth) Hoch of Wichita, Kansas and numerous cousins.In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to Grace United Methodist Church, Lambda Legal, One Iowa or Interfaith Alliance of Iowa.
