Laverne Elouise Shaw Hudson, 88, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016. At her request there will be no immediate service, though family and friends may gather for a memorial service at a later date. Laverne was born on the 4th of July 1928 in Harrah, Okla., the second of three children of Cleo and Nina Beatrice Shaw. An older sister, Cleora, predeceased her; a younger brother, James "Bud" Shaw, lives in Minneapolis, Minn. Laverne met her husband, Glen Hudson, when he was stationed with the Navy in nearby Norman, Okla. Glen's brother, Alvin, was married to Laverne's older sister. Laverne and Glen were married in 1948 in Shenandoah, Iowa, and raised three children, first in Des Moines, Iowa, and then in Fort Worth. The family spent a few years in southern California in the '60s, but returned to make their home in Fort Worth in 1969. While in California shepherding three kids through school, Laverne became a licensed practical nurse. She continued her nursing career in Fort Worth and spent many great years working in the John Peter Smith Hospital operating room. Laverne took great satisfaction in her work in the medical profession and enjoyed participating in teaching and mentoring several new generations of doctors and nurses. Laverne was an artist and craftsman and could whip up the required school costume or an award-winning original Halloween outfit from a cardboard box, an oatmeal container, balloons and glitter. She was also a great and innovative cook with an intuitive appreciation of which recipes would produce great results - and she usually added her own touch to good effect. "Cooking is like playing jazz," she once remarked, "when you get good you can ad lib." She didn't put yucky stuff on the table for her kids; many of us learned about cooking from Laverne and continue to feed her recipes to our families on a regular basis. Laverne was predeceased by her husband, Glen, and their daughter, Anita. Survivors: She is survived by her sons, Dr. David Hudson and his wife, Dr. Kathleen Hudson, of Charlottesville, Va., and John Paul Hudson of Fort Worth; granddaughters, Korin Hudson Fabian, M.D., and her husband, Christopher Fabian, of Alexandria, Va., and Maj. Brie Hudson Vihlen, USAF, and her husband, Edwin Vihlen of Colorado Springs, Colo. She is also survived by three high-energy great-grandsons, Andrew and Alexander Fabian and Colin Vihlen. Laverne sewed and quilted special blankets for all three. Also surviving is her nephew, Gary Hudson of Des Moines, Iowa, son of her sister, Cleora, and brother-in-law, Alvin Hudson, who she thought of as her "third son." All who knew Laverne will remember her straightforward demeanor, welcoming heart, great cooking (especially on special occasions like Friday!), her practical and loving nature, wry sense of humor and the twinkle in her eye. She left this note, which she had read in the newspaper: "If you must bury something, let it be my faults, my weaknesses, and all prejudice against my fellow man. Give my sins to the devil. Give my soul to God. If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you do all I asked, I will live forever."--Robert N. Test
