ALBION — Larry L. Berkes, 73, of Albion died on Friday, January 17, 2014, at the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. Mr. Berkes had been in declining health for the past year. Mr. Berkes was born on January 25, 1940, in rural Avilla to the late Kenneth and Wilma (Scheurich) Berkes. On February 15, 1959, at the Merriam Christian Chapel Church he married Beverly Webber. She survives. Larry was a lifetime area resident and a 1958 graduate of the Wolf Lake High School. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Albion. Larry was a lifetime dedicated farmer and also worked for several years and retiring from Food Marketing, now known as SuperValu. He loved fishing and farming, mushroom hunting, making homemade wine, going to antique auctions with his wife Beverly, and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving along with his wife are three sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky and Tina Berkes, Rodney and Nance Berkes and Ryan and Marla Berkes, all of Albion; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Gary Robbins, also of Albion; seven grandchildren,Brian Robbins, Luke Berkes, Kenny Berkes, Nicholas Berkes, Justin Berkes, Jenica Berkes and Maitlen Berkes; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Max and Brenda Berkes of Albion and Melvin Berkes of Kendallville; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Peggy Thomas of Kimmell, Pat and Don Stangland of Albion, Sandy and Jim Bills of Albion and Mary and Kevin LaFaver of Churubusco. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jack Berkes and Walter Berkes; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Robbins. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at 3 p.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 605 E. Main St., Albion with the Rev. Bret Frymier officiating. Following the memorial service the family will hold a reception in the fellowship hall at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Asbury United Methodist Church.
