Keith C. Herbst peacefully passed away at home on January 22, 2017 after an extended illness. Keith was born on March 22, 1925, the first child of Doris Charles Herbst and Bessie Robinson Herbst. He attended school in Groveland, Moreland and Blackfoot. Prior to high school graduation, Keith entered World War II and served in the US Navy as a gunner's mate on an LST in the South Pacific. Upon his return he married his high-school sweetheart, Betty Wheeler, on May 6, 1947 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. They had four children.Keith worked as a farmer, Blackfoot police officer, Bingham County deputy sheriff and at Boyle Furniture delivering furniture and installing carpet. In 1956 Keith went to work as a security guard for Westinghouse Electric Corp. at the present INL site. He worked at INL until his retirement in 1987.He enjoyed playing baseball, playing guitar, fishing, and camping; all of which were more enjoyable when joined by family members, instilling in them a love of the outdoors.  He was proud to fly the US flag in front of his home each and every day. He was also known for having the cleanest car in town and was a friend to all. He was very loved by his immediate and extended family.Keith was preceded in death by his parents, sister Rhua, brother Glenn, sister-in-law Deawn and great-granddaughter Autumn Marie Herbst Howard. He is survived by his wife, Betty, brother Von (Barbara), son Alan (Evelyn), son Bruce (Sheila), daughter Nancy (Rod) Lilya all of Blackfoot and son Royce (Mary Ann) of Alpine, Utah. Keith is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2017 at the Blackfoot East Stake Center, 1289 Mt. Putnam Drive, Blackfoot, ID. Family will meet with friends and family from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, January 29, 2017 at the Blackfoot East Stake Center, and for one hour prior to the service also at the stake center.
