Katherine Louise Cyr Obituary
Jan 29, 1929 - Jan 27, 2015
This obituary is administered by:
Katherine "Katie" Louise Cyr passed away at her home on Monday, April 27, 2015. Katie, known affectionately as "Gema" by her eleven Grandchildren and seven Great Grandchildren, will be greatly missed by them and all that knew her. Katie was born on January 29, 1929, in Presque Isle, Maine, to Daniel and Myrtle Morang. She graduated from Presque Isle's Cunningham High School. On November 5, 1949, she married the love of her life Ronald Cyr. While living in Maine they had three of their four children. They managed to tolerate the horrendous winters in Maine for many years. Then one rather extremely cold winter Ron's delivery truck had a heater malfunction and as he described, practically froze to death. Within a few weeks Ron's parents, who were then living in Yuma, suggested they come to a warmer climate. They packed up all of their belongings in a 1956 Mercury and a U-Haul trailer and headed to the hottest place on earth. Their fourth child was born within the year. Katie and Ron were community people. They were soon very active in the Yuma Jaycees and Lions Club. Over the years, Katie served as an officer at all levels of the Jaycee Auxiliary, Spurettes, and Beta Sigma Phi. For over twenty years, Katie and Ron, were instrumental in the production of Yuma's Silver Spur Rodeo, the Rodeo Parade, and many Rodeo Dances. Silver Riders from across the nation knew Ron and Katie as personal friends. Trick roper, Montie Montana, and the famous rodeo clown and bullfighter, Chuck Hensen, were guests at their home over the years. Katie was actively involved in Crane School including their Annual Barbeque, Fall Festival, and anything else that needed an extra hand. In 1983, Ron passed away from a long bout with cancer. At that time Katie was employed as a travel agent for her friend Jeanne Dale of Chaparral Travel Service and continued to support and raise her family. Katie never remarried because, "I married the man I Love and by God I have not looked at another man since." As the grandchildren started to arrive in her life her devotion turned entirely to the love, caring and watching over their young lives. She was soon given the moniker "Gema" by grandchild number one, Bryan Gwynn, and has continued on to this day as "Gema" to her grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as others with whom she was close. Along with rolling silverware for The Garden Café, Katie kept her life busy with old friends, grand and great grandchildren, and perusing the Dollar Store looking for bargains. Katie is preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Myrtle Morang; her husband, Ron; her brothers, Cliff and Charlie; and sister, Geraldine. She is survived by her brother, Danny Morang Jr. of Maine; son, Charlie; daughter, Debbie Gwynn (Bruce) of Yuma; sons, Michael of Lake Tahoe and Patrick of Evansville Indiana; niece, Sandie Morang; nephew, Dennis Morang of Yuma; grandchildren, Bryan Gwynn (Gretchen), Toby Gwynn, Ross Gwynn (Sarah), Johnnie Rae Cyr, Ronnie Lyn Cyr, Thea Powers (Jay), Chamae Cyr, Braun Cyr, Josh Cyr, Pat Cyr, and Nick Cyr; great grandchildren, Mia Gwynn, Kylie Gwynn, Lila Gwynn, Parker Gwynn, Evelyn Gwynn, Boston Powers, and Marek Powers. Pallbearers are the Grandchildren and great Grandchildren of Katie Cyr, Sandie Morang, Paul Melendrez and Jaime Mena. Honorary Pallbearers are the staff of the Garden Café. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Johnson Mortuary Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 4, 2015 a.m. at Johnson Mortuary Chapel, 1415 S. 1st Avenue, Yuma. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of Yuma.
