This obituary is administered by:
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Judith Page Mims Whitlock passed away Jan. 21, 2012. Judy was born on May 20, 1926, in Luray, Virginia. She was the fourth daughter of Ralph E. and Josephine Nichols Mims. She was the salutatorian in the 1943 graduating class of Luray High School, where she was on the varsity tennis and basketball teams. Her beauty and talent earned her the title of Miss Page County. At the Mimslyn Inn, which was built by her family in 1931, she enjoyed horseback riding and other activities. After attending the College of William and Mary for two years, she transferred to the University of Virginia. While there, she met her future husband, and fellow student W. Carl Whitlock,Jr. who had served as a Naval Aviator in the Pacific during World War II. They married in 1947 and raised four sons. After moving to North Carolina in 1953, her husband had a 30 year career with the DuPont Company. While living in North Carolina, Judy was an active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church and the Eastern Carolina Women's Tennis League. She raised her four sons to be strong, independent individuals. She loved going to the N.C. beaches as well as her family's summer house on the Shenandoah River in Page County, Va. After her husband's retirement in 1982, they moved to Charlottesville, Va.. They lived in the 1926 home by the University of Virginia where her husband had been raised. They soon became members of the Boar's Head Sports Club, where she once again excelled at tennis. Judy continued to travel to Wrightsville Beach where two of her sons had beach cottages. She also loved being closer to the Shenandoah River house and the families of her two sons who live in Ivy, Va.. Judy had a great sense of humor and was a very authentic person. She was very outgoing and loved to travel. Her many erudite aphorisms, often called "Nana-isms," have been passed down to the next generation and will be part of her legacy. Judy is survived by her husband, W. Carl Whitlock Jr. of Charlottesville; her sister, Patricia Mims Moore of Medford, Ore.; her four sons, Lawrence and his wife Priscilla of Ivy, Allan of Hillsborough, William and his wife Rebecca of Greensboro, and Mason and his wife Anne of Ivy, Va.; one granddaughter, Keller of Ivy, Va.; six grandsons, Benjamin and his wife Elizabeth of Wilmington, Austin of Charlottesville, Va., Matthew of Philadelphia, Pa., Brian and Stephen of Greensboro, and Foster of Ivy, Va.; and one great-grandson, Carter, of Wilmington, as well as many nieces and nephews.
