Joseph E. Steagall1922 - 2014Joseph E. Steagall, 92, of Kenosha died Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at his daughters home in Waterford where he had been living since his wife passed away in 2009.Joseph was born on Feb. 7, 1922, in Elton, Wis., the son of Charles and Louisiana Luttie (Haney) Steagall. He attended school in Crandon, and married Jacqueline Faye Sharp on May 18, 1942, in that city. On Nov. 27, 1942, he was inducted in the
Army. He received training for the U.S. Army Field Engineers and was honorably discharged in 1943 due to a disability. He later enlisted in the
U.S. Navy on Jan. 27, 1950, and was honorably discharged on Nov. 6, 1950.Joseph and Jacqueline lived for a time in Crandon and then relocated to Waukegan, Ill., where Joe worked various jobs. They soon moved to Kenosha, Wis., where they raised their five children.In 1943, Joe was hired by Nash Motors, which later became American Motors and then Chrysler Corporation, from which he retired after 37 years. In October 1956 there was a natural gas explosion at the plant which resulted in burns to 15 workers, and Joe was one of six with severe burns and fully recovered. He was a chief steward for several years, and during the 1960s, he served on the UAW Local 72 executive board. He had the honor of escorting John F. Kennedy, then a young senator, around Kenosha and then riding on a train to Chicago with him. Joe had a hobby farm in the county where he kept his horses. He would give rides to children in his pony cart. He liked dogs and had several during his lifetime. He enjoyed deer hunting, camping and gardening. After he retired his wife had a stroke and he was her caregiver in their home for eleven years until it was necessary for her to enter a nursing home facility. He would visit her daily until she passed away in 2009. He then decided to live with his daughter, Cindy, in Waterford.He was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline, his parents, brothers, William Ancel, Ben, and James Steagall, and sisters, Flossie Steagall, Dorothy Caudill, Orpha Sorensen, Goldie Bowen and Violet Roberts, as well as several pre-mature grandchildren and one great-grandchild.Joseph is survived by his three sons, Larry (Pat) of Trevor, Jim (Carolyn) of Winslow, Ariz., and David (Becky) of Eleva, Wis.; two daughters, Jacqueline Parrett of Ft. Pierce, Fla., and Cindy (Steve) Haukedahl of Waterford; grandchildren, Jim, April, Larry, Dawn, Jeff, Trisha, Amy and Cory; 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles (Alice) Steagall of Union Grove; two sisters, Lucy Fettinger of Seminole, Fla., and Shirley (Bill) Plummer of Crandon.A visitation will be held on Monday, April 28, 2014, at Kenosha Funeral Services from 5-7 p.m. and Tuesday April 29, 2014 at Kenosha Funeral Services from 10:30-11 a.m. Burial to follow at Green Ridge Cemetery with Military Honors.Kenosha Funeral Services & Crematory8226 Sheridan Rd.Kenosha, WI 53143(262) 652-1943
