Joseph A. FletcherJoseph A. Fletcher, 83, of West Lafayette, passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2017.He was born on October 10, 1933 in Canton, Ohio to the late Joseph A. Fletcher, Sr. and Mary (Miller) Fletcher.Joseph graduated from Lehman High School in Canton, Ohio and received his Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from Ohio University in 1957, where he was a member of Sigma Chi and Tau Beta Pi. He then received his MSCE with an emphasis on Traffic and Transportation from Purdue University in 1961.From 1968 to 1973 he served as the Tippecanoe County Executive Director of the Area Plan Commission. After returning to Purdue to teach Technical Graphics, he joined the Highway Extension and Research Project for Indiana counties and cities. He helped prepare for and participated in Road School each spring. Joe traveled hundreds of miles to present training courses on Traffic Safety and Traffic Signing to a myriad of officials and workmen in all 92 counties and 117 cities in Indiana. Joseph received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award for his outstanding service to the State of Indiana before retiring from this position in March of 1997.Joseph is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha (Myers) Fletcher. They eloped to Albion, IN in April of 1956. He is also survived by their 5 children, Douglas Fletcher of Lafayette, Linda Kuskye of Cordova, TN, Janice Brandmeyer of West Lafayette, Paula (David) Randich of Jasper, IN, and Steven Fletcher of Knoxville, TN; 13 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. His sister, Margery A. Fletcher lives in Canton, Ohio.Joe loved life and shared his never-ending sense of humor with family and friends. He was an avid football and basketball fan, bowled, golfed, and played recreational baseball and softball until he was in his fifties. He was a member of the John Purdue Club and a lifetime member of the Purdue Alumni Association.A private family service will be held.
