Johnny "Max" Mares, 77, a resident of Mora, and former resident of Buena Vista, was called home by his Heavenly Father while surrounded by all his loved ones on Saturday, May 23, 2015, following an extended battle with cancer."Juan" as known to many, was born on Sept. 14, 1938, to the late Pedro and Lilly Mares.He had a love for the outdoors. Often times he would be seen going for wood, going fishing or hanging with friends. He was a devoted dad, grandpa, son, brother, uncle and friend. He had a smile that could brighten any day.Juan was preceded in death by his parents: Pete and Lilly Mares; sister: Magdalena Weber; brother: Pete Mares, Jr.; and niece: Shirley Weber.He is survived by his sons: Johnny Mares of Raton, Richard Mares of Springer, Jonathan Mares of Los Lunas; daughters: Lisa Mares of Belen, Geraldine Mares of Belen; step-children: Irene Miller of Veguita, Christine Chavez of Belen, Patricia Baca and husband, Fidel, of Belen; brothers: Adonice "Don" Mares of Las Vegas, Eddie Mares and wife, Cathy, of Chacon, Jerry Mares and wife, Lucy, of Mora, Jessie Mares and wife, Patty, of Farmington; sisters: Dora Maes of Albuquerque, Virginia Maes and husband, Tony, of Cleveland, Julia Lovato of Las Vegas, Lucy Mares of Mora, Gloria Gallegos and husband, Tommy, of Mora; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and special friends.Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) at St. Gertrude Church in Mora. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday also at St. Gertrude Church with Father Dennis Dolter, SOLT as celebrant.
