Wied, John "Jack" W.John "Jack" W. Wied, age 87, of Amherst, WI passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at his residence. Jack was born on the family farm in the Town of Belmont, Portage County on June 26, 1929, the son of the late Albertus "Bert" and Irene (Wood) Wied. He attended grade school at Sunny View School. He then attended Waupaca High School. Jack enlisted in the US Army in December 1945 at Fort Snelling. He took a train to Fort Lewis, WA for basic training. After 8 weeks, he took a train to New York to board a troop ship to Bremerhauer, Germany. He was stationed at Darmstiar, Germany as a military policeman during the occupation of Germany. He returned to the United States in May 1947 and was honorable discharged at Camp Kilmer, NJ. Jack worked in construction the balance of 1947. He then went to Milwaukee and worked in the Blatz Brewing Co. On December 16, 1948, Jack married Harriet Pavelski at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lanark. They lived in Milwaukee for 10 years. In the spring of 1952, they purchased a farm in the Town of Buena Vista and began diary farming in 1958. In May of 1967, jack was appointed Postmaster of Amherst, WI. He retired from that job in 1989. He continued to farm in the Buena Vista and Blaine area. He is a member of the American Legion & VFW. He is survived by his daughter: Bonnie (Terry) Rogers, Almond; his grandsons: Bert (April) Rogers, Wauwatosa and Casey (Sara) Rogers, Almond and his great grandchildren: Duncan, Aili, Lucy, Reed & Dane. Also surviving are many nieces & nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Harriet, two infant sons and 9 siblings. The Funeral Service will be on Saturday, March 11 at 10:30 AM at the Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca. Burial with military honors will follow in the Lind Center Cemetery, Town of Lind. Visitation will be on Friday evening from 5 PM to 8 PM at the funeral home.
