John Sewell OsburnSan AngeloJohn Sewell Osburn Jr., 95, of San Angelo, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017. A viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, followed by the service at 2 p.m. Both will be held at the Eden Funeral Home with the burial service in the Eden Cemetery.Johnny Osburn was born on April 18, 1921 in Quanah, Texas to John Sewell Osburn Sr. and Elsie Mae Caldwell-Osburn. Johnny attended Clara High school and graduated in 1939. As a boy, all he wanted to do was ranch. He started this career early in life by purchasing his first horse when he was very young and also started running sheep while he was still in school. After graduation, Johnny's family moved to Hood County, Texas where he and his father partnered on a larger scale ranching operation. Soon, the drought of the 50's was onset and Johnny held down many other jobs to supplement his ranching income such as: owning a Texaco fuel distribution company; owning and operating a farm and ranch supply store that also had western wear available; pasturing cattle for other operators such as Taylor Motor Co. out of Coleman, County, who were less fortunate to get even as much rain as he; order buying livestock for large packing houses and other customers; running a wool and mohair warehouse for Lucious M. Stephens; and selling vet supplies which ended up being a 17 year long job. Johnny met Martha Ann Reed when she was still in high school at Fairview Community Church and ended up asking her for a date when she had graduated and was attending college. Johnny and Ann married on Feb. 10, 1956, and had their first son, Alan Ray Osburn, on June 17, 1957. John Brad Osburn, their second son, was born on Oct. 3, 1962.In 1968, Johnny moved his family to Meridian, Texas where he had purchased, what they called, The Mountain Top Ranch. He ran this country for several years, then in 1974, he bought a place in Santa Anna. The Santa Anna ranch was very short lived because that same year, Johnny was searching for a ranch for a friend and wound up finding the ranch of his dreams in Eden, Texas. Johnny bought this ranch and maintained ownership of this place to his last day. For many years, Johnny ran this ranch, other deeded country and countless lease places with the help of his two sons and eventually even his grandchildren.Johnny loved ranching, but he also loved to travel the Western United States, taking his family members on many vacations to the mountains of the West. Johnny also loved The Lord. He was a lifelong Baptist and taught various Youth Groups and Sunday School classes for many years. All of you remember that Johnny was always quick witted with a joke for every occasion and always wore a smile.Johnny was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Narene Priddy. He is survived by his wife, Martha Ann Osburn; sons, Alan and Brad and wife Anita; grandchildren, Mark and wife Amanda, Kevin and wife Mary-Beth, Beau and wife Kristen, Lacey and husband Daniel Sears, and Kara Osburn; great- grandchildren in order of age are Rylee BriAnne Sears, Brason Wayne Sears, Myra Ann Osburn, Agustus Ray Osburn, Kadence June Osburn, and Hayes Sewell Osburn.
