John Barry Moe1919 - 2013John B. Moe, born on Oct. 18, 1919, died peacefully at Burlington Memorial Hospital Dec. 27, 2013, surrounded by his family. He was fortunate to have attended Christmas Mass and celebrations at home. John was born to Edwin and Emily (Barry) Moe Oct. 18, 1919. He received a bachelors degree in business from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1941. After graduation, John returned to Burlington and worked in the accounting department of Pet Milk. His career was interrupted by World War II. John enlisted in the Army Air Corp the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He trained as a B25 radio operator. Later he attended the University of Missouri language school and became an interpreter for Italian prisoners of war at an army camp near Sidney, Nebraska. He maintained lifelong friendships with several of the war prisoners.While stationed in Sidney, he met Mary Beyer, the love of his life. They were married on Nov. 9, 1944. After the war, John, Mary and their first daughter Dian returned to Burlington. John worked as a public accountant for 67 years, selling his business and retiring earlier this year. At one time, he was the primary owner of Motor Parts. John was a founding member of the Catholic Central High School Endowment Fund and the Roundtable organization. He was proud that all of his children attended Catholic Central High School. He remained active as a Catholic Central Board member and served on the Burlington Rescue Squad Board until his death. A former President of the Burlington Rotary Club, he was an active member for over 60 years. He was a lifelong member of Saint Charles Parish where he attended elementary school and later served on the Parish Finance Committee and was a lector at Mass.Volunteering and community work were of utmost importance to John. He served as a Board member of the Burlington Memorial Hospital, the Burlington Park Board, the United Fund, and was the initiator of the first auto raffle at St. Charles. He and his wife Mary also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. For years he held Thursday night gatherings where all family and friends were welcome. John was preceded in death by his wife Mary; and sisters Grace Klinkhammer, Mary (Bree) Moe. He is survived by all of his children, Dian (Dennis) Lynch, Janet (Stephen) Chiavetta, Donna Moe, Jack (Laurie Le Grande) Moe, Joanne (Gregory) Johnson, Delaine (Mario Garretto) Moe, Jerie (Joel Jacobsen) Moe, Jeffrey (Loy) Moe, and Barry (Chaya) Moe; 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.The family will meet with visitors at St. Charles on Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 6 p.m. A private burial will take place on Tuesday.In lieu of flowers, memorials to Catholic Central Endowment or St. Charles Parish would be appreciated.Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home & Crematory625 S.
