John H. Carman Obituary

Sep 27, 1935 - Dec 29, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
John H. Carman, 81John H. Carman, 81, of St. Cloud, FL died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016 in Hospice Care at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Madison, FL after a long illness. A Memorial Service in Iowa City is being planned for 2017. John Homer Carman was born on September 27, 1935 in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of Dr. James J. Carman and Eunice Gillogly Carman. He graduated from Hampton High School in Allison Park, PA in 1953 and from Allegheny College, in Meadville, PA, in 1957. In high school and college John was frequently recognized for his accomplishments in many sports. He received All American honors for football in 1956 and in 1957 was named Allegheny College Athlete of the Year. These accomplishments were particularly notable because of injuries John suffered early in his life. At the age of 6 John's legs were severely burned in a fire. Prognosis at that time was that John might never walk again or that the use of his legs would be significantly reduced. Despite those predictions and years of recurring infections in the skin grafts on his legs, John's determination and resolve throughout his school years resulted in physical challenges repeatedly met and conquered.John received his M.S. Degree from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, NM, and his Ph.D. (in Geological Sciences) from Pennsylvania State University. Some of his doctoral work was completed at Stanford University. John joined the Geology Department at the University of Iowa in 1968. Early in his career he also carried out research at The Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD and The Geophysical Laboratory in Washington, D.C. In 1977 John left the University to pursue his own research interests, and he continued to work on various projects off and on until illness impeded further progress.John is survived by his children: Jeffrey of Grand Junction, CO; Craig (Christine Annicella) of Iowa City; Kate (James Robinson) of Chicago; and Glen (Ann Bradlow) of Chicago. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Zachary and Mimi Carman of North Falmouth, MA; Isabel and Ellen Carman of Iowa City; James and Matthew Robinson of Chicago; and Louisa and Evan Carman of Chicago. Survivors also include John's former wives, Joyce Carman-Baldus of Iowa City and Carol Weeks of St. Cloud, FL. John's brother and sister (Dr. James W. G. Carman and JoAnn Carman Dufty) preceded him in death.John's love for the natural world, his respect for the land, and his desire to understand the intricacies of forces that formed the earth provided a spiritual source of meaning to him through the years. He will be dearly missed.Memorial donations may be directed to Compeer of Johnson County and/or NAMIJC.Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.lensingfuneral.com
