This obituary is administered by:
BUNKERJohn Austin Bunker (Jack) died at home in his sleep on Sunday, February 19, 2017. He was a beloved husband and father of six. He was born on September 6, 1922 in Cincinnati, Ohio into a literary family, and both of his parents were noted published authors. Jack met his "lovely lady" Mary Lou, on a tennis court where he worked during his freshman year in college and she practiced with a friend. During their courtship, Jack was drafted into the army during World War II and served at Hickam Field Air Force Base in Hawaii as a medic. He and Mary Lou married in 1945 while he was home on a brief furlough. When the war ended he returned to Cincinnati and Xavier University where he completed his degree in philosophy. After graduation he took a job with Kroger where he began building his career in the advertising department. After gaining some experience in the ad business, he was ready for a bigger challenge. In 1952 this young couple and their two young daughters left their families and friends and moved 800 miles south to Jacksonville, Florida where he had been offered a job with an advertising agency. Jack and Mary Lou chose a home in the St. Nicholas area so his children could walk to school at Assumption and Bishop Kenny High School. As a partner in two successive advertising agencies, his eloquent words earned him many high profile accounts including Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Florida. In these early days of Jacksonville, he was on a naming committee for Deerwood when the Baymeadows area was being developed. Jack began his own agency in 1979: John Bunker Advertising. His varied hobbies included sailing his Hobie Cat, buying a small plane for his advertising agency and obtaining his pilot's license, and scuba diving. He enjoyed symphonies, art museums, and classical literature. Most importantly, he measured his success as a man by what kind of father he was. He took great joy in playing "Mr. McGregor and Peter Rabbit" with his five children and demonstrating everyone's favorite "Two little blackbirds sitting on a limb." He entertained kids and grandkids alike with his corny knock-knock jokes. Jack has been a member of Assumption parish for 65 years, served as a Eucharistic Minister, took Communion to the hospital, volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul, and was involved in Cursillo. He had an absolutely straight moral compass. Jack also volunteered as a Guardian ad Litem and at Memorial Hospital. He was a Civil War buff, and he and Mary Lou traveled the globe after retirement. In 2007 Jack suffered a severe stroke but continued his "flirty eyes" for Mary Lou even while in the hospital. After Mary Lou died in 2013, Jack was assisted at home by his devoted caregiver, Donna, who shared his enthusiasm for crossword puzzles and TV sports. He was predeceased by a son, John Christopher. He leaves behind his children, Susan Altieri (Toney), Paula Fuller (Bryant), Michael Bunker (Pamela), Elisabeth Finnegan (Jay), and John Bunker also thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 1:30pm on Saturday, February 25, 2017 in Assumption Catholic Church located at 2403 Atlantic Blvd, Jacksonville, FL. 32207 with Father Donal Sullivan as Celebrant, followed by interment in Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Cemetery.
