MD BURLINGTON - John A, Van Susteren MD, age 93, of Burlington, died October 21, 2013 at Pine Brook Pointe Assisted Living Facility. John was born on January 14, 1920 in Little Chute, WI to Henry B. and Mary (nee Blindauer) Van Susteren. He spent his early life in Little Chute, graduating from St. Johns Grade School and Kimberly High School, where he was captain of the football team. John then went onto Pre Med at the
University of Wisconsin, Madison and graduated from Marquette University School of Medicine in 1946. He served in the US Army from 1942 to 1950 and was stationed in Japan as the Post Surgeon at the Ito Jima School Command. After returning to the United States he attended the
University of Minnesota, receiving his Masters Degree and Board Certification in Preventative Medicine & Public Health. He served with the Wisconsin National Guard from 1960 to 1962 advancing to the rank of Major. On July 24, 1944 he was united in marriage to Helen Fudzinski at St. Marys Help of Christians Catholic Church in West Allis. Following their marriage they resided in Milwaukee, Battle Creek, MI, 2 years in Japan with the Army of Occupation, Sparta, La Crosse, Madison, Florida and Madison. Helen preceded him in death on January 11, 1999. John has been a resident of Burlington since June 16, 2001. He was employed by the State of Wisconsin as a Physician in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. John was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church in Burlington, the State Medical Society, and A.M.A. He enjoyed singing, music, sports, especially football, tree farming, and loved to travel and go camping. John is survived by his son, Mark J. Van Susteren of Cottage Grove, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Helen, 9 brothers, Peter, Raymond, Norbert, Austin, Stanley, Urban, Joseph, Roman and Maurice and 5 sisters, Olive, Eva, Muriel, Irene and Joan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, October 25, 2013 at 4:00 PM at St. Marys Catholic Church, Burlington, with Rev. Jim Volkert presiding. Visitation will be Friday, October 25th at Good Sheppard Chapel in St. Marys Church from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Inurnment will be Saturday, October 26th at 1:00 PM at Chapel Hill Cemetery. Memorials to St. Marys Parish in Burlington or The Medical College of Wisconsin would be appreciated. The family would like to say a special thank you to Seasons Hospice & Continuing Care workers and all the wonderful people at Pine Brook Pointe for all their loving care and for making his home comfortable and his final years fulfilling and to Dr. Paul Webber for his care and compassion.
