November 3, 1925 - January 29, 2017Joanna J. Schmidt Churchill, a longtime resident of San Antonio, passed away Sunday, January 29th, 2017, in Cedar Park, Texas. Mrs. Churchill was born on Nov. 3, 1925, in Ft Worth, Texas, daughter of Milton H. Schmidt and Lillian Karp Schmidt.She is survived by her daughter, Jane Ann Churchill, and son-law, Brian Graham, of Austin, by brothers Milton "Bud" Schmidt of Irving, Texas, and Frank P. Schmidt of Grass Valley, California, and by nieces and nephews.Joanna was raised in San Antonio, her family's home town, and lived there until her marriage in 1944. She was a graduate of the public schools of San Antonio and Brackenridge High School, Class of 1943. After her graduation she worked as a runner for Frost National Bank.Mrs. Churchill met her husband, St. Sgt. Harold E. Churchill, a native of Ladysmith ,Wisconsin, and son of the late Albon W. Churchill and Millie Elwood Churchill, while he was undergoing training for the U.S. Army Air Forces in San Antonio and they were married there. She moved to Ladysmith, Wisconsin, in 1944 after her marriage and resided there until the late 1960s.Harold Churchill was killed in action in Germany in March 1945 while serving with the 8th Air Force, US Army Air Forces. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Ladysmith.While living in Ladysmith Joanna, or Jo, as she was known, worked for the Pioneer National Bank and later the Wisconsin Telephone Company. After leaving Ladysmith she worked for Southwest Bell Telephone in San Antonio and Pacific Bell in California. She retired from AT&T in 1988 after 25 years with the telephone company.After her retirement Mrs. Churchill lived in San Antonio, Florida and the country of New Zealand before settling again in San Antonio. She moved to Cedar Park shortly before her death.Jo loved to travel---often with fellow members of the Telephone Pioneers---and made many friends during her trips to Europe, Central America and the Pacific Rim, especially to New Zealand where she lived for some months and which she said was her favorite place to visit.A visitation will be held on Friday, February 10th, at 10:00 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, Ladysmith, with a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, adjacent to her husband. Lunch will be served after interment. Local arrangements by Nash-Jackan Funeral Homes, Ladysmith. In lieu of flowers, Joanna requested that contributions be made in her memory to Hope LutheranChurch.
