Simek, JoanJoan "JoAnn" E. Simek, 83, of Medford, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 29 at Aspirus Country Gardens, Medford where she had resided for the past four years. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, Medford with Rev. James Krueger officiating. Visitation will take place from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3 at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, Medford, where there will be a 6 p.m. VFW Auxiliary service held that evening. Visitation will also be held from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service at 1:30 p.m. at the church on Saturday. Interment will take place at Zion Ev. Lutheran Cemetery, Stetsonville. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jeremy Wolfe, Brandon, Jasen and Garrett Cummings, and Ben and Josef Simek.JoAnn was born on Feb. 16, 1933 in Medford to the late Anne N. (Feggestad) and William A. Matheus. She attended Medford area elementary schools and was a graduate of Medford High School and Taylor County Normal School, Medford. In March of 1955, at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, Medford, she married Ronald "Ron" L. Simek and they were later divorced. They farmed in the Town of Ogema for a period of time and then moved to Medford where they co-owned/co-operated Tombstone Tap Tavern. From 1962-1986 she was active as a co-owner and treasurer of Tombstone Pizza Corp. in Medford. She served for periods of time on the Medford City Council, Memorial Hospital Board, Medford Library Board, Marshfield Hospital and Clinic Board, Medford VFW Auxiliary, where she was past treasurer, president and historian. She was also a past president and treasurer of the Wisconsin VFW Auxiliary. She was a member of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, Medford.JoAnn is survived by her children, Rhonda (Robert) Cummings, Jeffrey (Lisa) Simek and Wendy (Brian) Cummings all of Ogema and Tony (Sandra) Simek of Cody, Wyo.; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and brothers, William (Evie) Matheus of West Bend, and Robert (Venita) Matheus of Beaver Dam.In addition to her parents, JoAnn is preceded in death by a brother, Donald Matheus.In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be given to the Medford VFW Auxiliary.
