Joan M. KrierAGE: 76 •Joan M. Krier, Professional in the Substance Abuse Field, Dies at 76Joan M. Krier, a retired professional in the field of substance abuse treatment and prevention, died on November 4, 2016, in Rockledge, Florida. The cause was cancer. She was 76.Mrs. Krier was born on July 7, 1940, in Belfast, Northern Ireland to parents Francis and Agnes Moneypenny. She was their only daughter, with five brothers: Desmond, Brendan, Lawrence, John, and Martin Moneypenny. Mrs. Krier immigrated to the United States in 1960. While living in New York, she met her husband, Donald A. Krier. They married on September 22, 1962. A longtime resident of New Jersey, Joan and Don raised four children, a son, Paul, and three daughters, Barbara, Siobhan, and Signe. Joan proudly became a U.S. citizen in 1974. After her children entered school, she started working in the substance abuse field. She began as a volunteer for the National Council on Alcoholism in Red Bank, New Jersey, and quickly advanced in her career, contributing in the field of treatment, education, and prevention; first as a counselor and then as an administrator. Mrs. Krier was the Executive Director of the Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Council of Ocean County in Lakewood, New Jersey, and then became Executive Director of a state-wide organization, the New Jersey Prevention Network. Mrs. Krier was a committee member for the Governor's Counsil on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. In 2002, she was the first recipient of the Paul Buckelew Humanitarian of the Year Award. In 2008, received a DEA Award for excellence in prevention. After retiring, Joan and Don moved to Florida. Mrs. Krier enjoyed spending time with her family, shopping, knitting and peanut M&Ms.Joan is survived by Don, her husband of fifty-four years, their children, Paul Krier of Manahawkin, NJ, Barbara Garofalo of Melbourne, FL, Siobhan Krier of Keyport, NJ, and Signe Avento of Melbourne, FL; five grandchildren, John Garofalo, Moira Krier, Olivia Krier, Isobel Avento, and Colin Avento, her brothers and sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews, family friends, and her beloved Cairn Terrier, Lucy.
