, MD RACINE - Jerome Joseph Veranth, 77, of Racine, Lake Tomahawk, Wisconsin and Desert Mountain, Scottsdale, Arizona passed away on March 9, 2012. Jerry was born on January 13, 1935 in Duluth, MN to Joseph and Joanna (Gohla) Veranth. He grew up in Ely, Minnesota, Waukegan, Illinois and Duluth, Minnesota. Jerry graduated from Cathedral High School in Duluth and Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. Jerry graduated from Marquette University School of Medicine in 1961 and married Carol Grace Pitz. He served his internship at Saint Mary's Hospital in Duluth and was a resident in Otolaryngology at Marquette University School of Medicine from 1962 to 1966. Jerry volunteered as a Clinical Instructor, Assistant Clinical Professor, and Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology at the Medical College of Wisconsin from 1968 to 1994. He served his country in the United States Naval Reserve from 1962 to 1970. Jerry served actively as the Assistant Chief of ENT service at the United States Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1966 to 1968. He was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Commander. Jerry practiced as an Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgeon in Racine, Wisconsin from 1968 to 1994. He loved living in and serving the Racine community, and was active in many civic, professional, medical, and service organizations. Jerry was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, and the State Medical Society of Wisconsin, where he served on the Physicians Alliance Commission and the Nominating Committee. He served on the Board of Directors of the Milwaukee Society of Head and Neck Surgery and was President from 1986 to 1987. Jerry was a member of the Board of the Racine Chapter of the American Cancer Society and the Racine Chamber of Commerce. He was the Founding President of the Racine Area Physicians Association. Jerry served terms as Chief of Surgery, Vice Chief of Staff, Chief of Staff, Chairman of the Credentialing Committee, and Board Member at Saint Mary's Medical Center in Racine. He also loved to play tennis and was a Lector, Lay Minister, and member of the Men's Choir at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Racine. In 1994 Jerry moved to Northern Wisconsin and established the Ear, Nose and Throat Department at Rhinelander Regional Medical Group, where he practiced until his retirement in 2000. Jerry Veranth loved his faith, and in 2004 his parish in Woodruff was merged with two other parishes to create the Holy Family Parish. Plans emerged to build a new church in the Minocqua-Woodruff area. Jerry dedicated many hours of service as a member of the Site and Facilities Study Committee and as the Co-Chair of the Building Committee. The award winning Holy Family Catholic Church was completed and dedicated in 2007. Music was one of his lifelong passions. He played clarinet throughout his life, including in the Rhinelander Area Community Band. Jerry was a self-taught piano player, and loved to play impromptu for family and guests at his home. Jerry is survived by his loving companion Bernice "Bea" Bukacek, his three sons, Jerome Joseph Jr. (Nancy Bolm), Michael James, and Anthony John (Christine Tepley); and his grandchildren Owen, Natalie, Grace, Ayden, Elle, Luke and Clare Veranth, and Christopher and Andrew Geenen. He is also survived by his brother, Frank Veranth and sister, Carola Claus. He loved spending time at his home on Two Sisters Lake and in Desert Mountain, Arizona. Jerry will dearly miss all of his snowmobiling, golf, and investment club buddies in Minocqua and his medical school friends in Arizona. In his retirement years he and Bea enjoyed golf, hiking, travel, and evening boat trips and swims on Two Sisters Lake. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 15th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm and Friday from 9 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Racine. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 16th at 10:00am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2201 Northwestern Avenue, Racine, WI.
